Advice needed - baby car seat questions (merged)

Just a quick reply as saw mentioned earlier about this car seat being compatible with pushchair. It is one of my absoloute pet hates to see babies in these, research has shown it causes damage to their hips and spine if left in them too long, as well as internal organs such as stomach and lungs. And in some rare cases has even caused death to babies left sleeping in them because their heads fall forward and cut off breathing. There is nothing nicer than seeing a newborn strecthing out flat in a carrycot all cosy and comfy rather than hunched up in a travel seat.0

It's all well and good saying that they look nicer in a carrycot! But a carrycot does not provide any impact protection in a crash - even the ones that can be strapped into the car.
Safety should not be compromised when travelling.please listen to MFD - she is a wise womanProud Mummy to the gorgeous Benjamin John born 14 March 2009, 8lbs 14ozA new little seedling on the way, due 30 September 20120 -
I completely agree! At no point in my post did I mention them being in a carrycot in the car! My post stated they shouldn't be in car seats OUT of the car!
Thank you for reading it so carefully!0 -

I read something recently questioning the safety of the car seat bases vs car seats which strap in with a belt. I don't know whether it was about idofix bases or the bases which strap in with a seatbelt though. I will see if I can find it.I don't believe and I never did that two wrongs make a right0

Totally agree about hating to see babies in car seats when they aren't in the car. You are correct there has bee research to show that babies oxygen levels fall when left in car seats for long periods. The recommendation is that babies under 6 weeks should not be in a car seat for more than 1/2 and hour and over that age they should not be in the car seat for longer than 1 1/2 hours. They don't actually need to be out of the car seat for long to gain full saturation of oxygen in the blood again but as you mention I would query whether being in the one cramped poistion is good foe spinal develipment although I haven't seen any research on this.
And just my personal opinion but a baby snuggled into a sling on it's mother's chest is so much nicer to see than one lying "snuggled" on a hard pram surface.0 -

Car seat bases whether isofix or not are infinitely safer than those without. If you go to your local council car safety seat sessions and ask them to try both in your car you will see the evidence. Without the base it is impossible to stop the car seat from moving side to side if you push it in the middle.
£160 or whatever is a small price to pay for the safety of a child.0 -
Ladies - as a first timer who will be making this decision very soon (due in March) can I ask what research you are looking at?
The only research I can find was done back in 2001, following which the guidelines changed and all baby seats were redesigned to offer greater head support and a more reclined position...
The only thing I can find in the current guidance is that using a car seat as a buggy or allowing baby to sleep in a car seat (as long as not for prolonged periods) should be of no harm to baby...
Prolonged periods is not defined from what I can see...but one would imagine that it would mean more than a few hours???
Can you point me at what you are looking at? My baby brain is struggling with mundane tasks at the moment so trying to research this is sending me loopy!!please listen to MFD - she is a wise womanProud Mummy to the gorgeous Benjamin John born 14 March 2009, 8lbs 14ozA new little seedling on the way, due 30 September 20120 -
Can't find anything off hand more recent than 2006 either

Has some links if you really want to scare yourselfHowever, they then go on to recommend carrycots in cars over car seats, which I think is contrary to Which safety reports.
I remember the advice of our NCT postnatal teacher, who was talking to one member of our group, a rather neurotic American woman. She'd been stopping every car journey after exactly 30 mins, to wake & remove her child from the carseat.
NCT lady said, in cars, they are safest in car seats. Out of cars, you should put them elsewhere. Stopping journeys THAT regularly to wake baby would only lead to more stress on everyone & was best avoided.0
