Advice needed - baby car seat questions (merged)

I personally would not put a baby in a forward facing car seat until over 9kg. I still have my 11 month old rear facing and she can walk unaided but is not yet 9kg. I have found if the harness is tight enough she cannot sit forward and look around.MF aim 10th December 2020 :j:eek:MFW 2012 no86 OP 0/20000

I have the britax first class si, and it is suitable up to 4 yrs. DD is one next week and I intend on keeping her rear facing as long as poss! I'm confused when you say he is turning round in his seat? His straps should be holding him in place if not they probably need to be tighter IMO. I have a toy on the back of the seat which DD plays with when we drive, and as the britax seat is very high she can see out the back window which keeps her entertained. Personally I would not risk putting her forward facing to early as if the worst happened you would never forgive yourself, watch some vids online on the differences between forward and rear facing accidents!

I put both my kids in front facing when they were around 18lbs. They just couldn't squeeze into rear facing seat anymore (esp my DD who is on 98th centile for height and weight). I did keep the forward facing seat tilted back as much as possible through until neck muscles were stronger.I have a gift for enraging people, but if I ever bore you it'll be with a knife

hi
my DD is very nearly 15kgs and we were going to get her a 2/3 group car seat.
the weight guidelines on these seats are 15kg but the age suggestion is 4 years!
Would my DD be OK in this kind of car seat? OK on the weight but too young on the age
Thanks!

I thought the age suggestion on these sort of seats is UP TO 4 years, rather than just 4 years? Not entirely sure of this, but thought that was what my daughter's said. Anyway, I would doubt there'd be a problem with this as long as she satisfies the weight aspect.
Best advice I can give you though is to go to Mothercare (my 1st choice) or Halfords, but I found Mothercare to be brilliant. The helped me immensely and even fitted the car seat for me (the seat fitting service is only available at there larger stores with on site car parking).0 -
Best thing I can advise is to speak to an official seller. I'm currently going through a similar thing with my boy who's still in his "baby" car seat at 15 months because he's teeny. I've been told that to go to the next size is not just about height and weight and age, but about physical ability - so it depends on him sitting right, having body strength etc too.
I've no idea if that actually made any sense or if it was in any way relevant!"outside of a dog, a book is man's best friend. inside of a dog, it's too dark to read" - Groucho Marx0 -
A friend of mine has just moved her daughter into one of these (she's 2yrs 10m and tall for her age), says it's much quicker and easier getting her in and out of the car. Personally I plan to keep my DD in her Isofix, 5-point harness, super-padded seat for as long as humanly possible! Maybe until she's 16........:D0

What about a 9KG to 36KG (9 months to 11 years) car seat? Your DD will be old enough and not too heavy for one.
Not much choice on Mothercare but Kiddicare have much more choice! My daughter is only 18 months but im planning on buying one of these as a spare as we will get much more use out of one

I'd just like to add my thoughts on the matter of car seats. I am a strong advocate of rearward facing seats, they do cost more but they are 5 times safer than a frontward facing seat. My son is 17 months and has been in his for a few months. He sees no difference and is happy facing that way. Also the seat I have will last until he no longer needs a seat as it can become a booster seat too.
There are some really useful web sites with infomation about the seats and the added safety. Please have a serious look at these, they save more lives than conventional seats.0 -
