stuff to make packed lunches counts as essential. If you, however, chose to buy a sandwich at work instead, that would have to come out of your £20 because you could have done it cheaper with a bit of effort.

coffee......much as I would like to say it is essential........if you are choosing to take in your own because you prefer it, then it is to come out of your £20. My fake cappucino sachets come out of my £20, because I am buying them instead of having nescafe at work.....but I am still saving, because I don't go into Costa Coffee opposite the office!

I thought so - you do get 200 cups out of a bag of grounds so its waaaaaaay cheaper than Costas but its still £5 so boooo ;)

    Hi Hypno!

Haven't been on the forum for a very long time, but have this month reached our half way target, sub £30k, and got all inspired again. Came on here to see if I can get the dfd here even quicker, and wondered how you were getting on as we were about the same level at one point, looks like you're slightly ahead atm :T

I know what you mean reference the children (apologies, I haven't read the whole diary yet, that will be tonight's bedtime reading) and skiing. I spend £35 quid a week on a pony - unnecessary spend for sure, but it provides a hobby for all 3 kids and me, a good source of healthy outdoor confidence giving fun. Also like you say, they didn't get us into this mess, and they understand that there are other sacrifices to be made in order to facilitate this.

Congratulations on the marathon!!! I am planning my first next year - New Forest Marathon. I did my first half this year and love it. Totally gutted at present cos a horse fell on me, meaning I've got at least 6 weeks off running.

Anyway, I'm hogging your diary - was just so pleased to see you're still on here and doing so well. So sorry to hear about your dad though x

Take care and hopefully speak soon,
    Brassic

Glad to see Shaun managed to get up after so little sleep.

We have lovely sunny day here for them today and I have made cake so all should be well.

It will be strange to meet a MSEr in the flesh :D

It is a weird thing, isn't it..... but we really are all real people! Hope you both/all have a great visit.
    xx

Hypno - what I think I'll do is do a virtual £20, it doesn't fit in with the way I have my finances organised to have an actual £20 - but the concept is really helpful. I'm at my sister's house in France next week, so I won't do it then, tho it shouldn't be too expensive - we're an hour's walk from the nearest village (though that village has two patisseries!) I'll watch the pennies/cents, but it doesn't make sense to distort the everyday situation with a week like that. Does that pass the Board of Examiners test? :rotfl:

    Morning all,

I'm certainly off to a good start with the £20 challenge...I've left it at home! :o

An unintentional tactic but a helpful one nonetheless! :T

Ok, I guess this is a record but my £20 is gone! My adorable puppy dog (ok, she's not really a puppy at one but she is adorable) broke her leg this morning so I now have no money at all until the insurance pay up. I have to find the money first then claim it so I'm having NSD x lots for about a month!!!

She's having an op as we speak ... she'll be fine but I'm carp when it comes to my children or animals being in pain. Ok, i'm going to go and breath in a darkened room! xx

ETA - it's turned out to be a chipped bone and damaged ligament. Now, where did I put my cash back credit card!!!

Hi Mudbath - so sorry to hear about your dog .... even tho the actual £20 may be gone, tho, I don't think that counts as inessential spends! How can you not go to the vet with that! Hope she comes round really soon, and you can get her back asap.

Brassic - hello!!! Lovely to hear from you and to see that you are still making excellent progress :D

For those newer to my diary, Brassic was one of the first people I got to "know" on MSE......as she says, our debts were very similar (although later on I owned up to many more :o) and it was nice for me to know I was not the only one who owed so much money at the time!

    Rainy, nice tactic :T

KC - How can you "spend" a virtual £20 note? I am confused - does that mean that if you "think" about buying a yummy pastry, you deduct the cost from your virtual £20  If that is the case, then mine would be gone even quicker than Mudbath's has :o

Talking of which, I think we can allow vets bills to be an essential. Hardly the same as buying a kitkat or a deli sandwich, is it! Also, if the insurance is going to pay up in due course, you have not "spent" your £20, merely borrowed it.....

I've just moved a mystery shop to tomorrow so the rest of the day *should* be NSD as I'm not going out (just need to resist the corner shop) and I'm doing overtime 5-11 tonight.
Going to dust off the breadmaker and make some banana bread as my treat for working today as for once DS hasn't scoffed all the bananas (although he did eat all the strawberries)
