Most worrying of all, the staff were not able to answer the question I repeatedly put to them "Do you know the difference between a Visa Debit Electron card and a Connect card?"

"No, but a Connect card is much better!" came the pat response from Barclays Bank staff.
After a year of nagging them and lodging complaints (always a waste of time with Barclays, I've found) I got to speak with someone honest AND intelligent - who was willing to tell me Barclays no longer issue Visa Debit Electron cards.

I'm not so certain that you know the difference between Visa Electron and Visa Debit cards either.

Same here! I rang Barclays to renew my Electron card and they asked me (over the phone) to cut up my old one and promised to send me a new one. But all they would offer was a Connect card. That's correct, Barclays now only do a Visa Debit Connect card with cheque guarantee limit and a full-authorisation Visa Debit Connect card without a cheque guarantee limit. The full authorisation card is almost like an Electron. To be honest, if you have one of these full-auth cards I would just try it as an electron card on ryanair's,etc website.

I have a normal Visa Debit Connect card and funnily enough I put this down as an electron card on the dropdown menu on easyjet's website and it got accepted without any surcharge!

Just applied for the Halifax card - took no more than 3 or 4 minutes.

Don't waste your money on a Travelex (or other cost provider) electron card. Abbey and other banks offer them for free. I have my main account at Abbey and use my Visa Debit card for my main spending, and also have an Electron card for when I book with Ryanair and Monarch.

I have mine with the Halifax and use my Cahoot account to top up my Halifax account. Thought some of you might find that useful.

I went to open the Coop Cashminder account last week, which had been recommended as having an Electron card, but was told that they are no longer doing "a card you can use with Ryanair".

I've just applied online for the Halifax Easycash account mentioned above. The application took just 5 minutes, but it looks like the card is probably at least a week's wait. Can any recent applicants confirm how long before they had a card they could use?

Just tried to book a flight with them, it did not take the card.
I called Customers Support and they told me they only take a VISA ELECTRON if it has been issued from a bank or building society
