This is the verdict from the OP!

The house we moved into was completely vile, nothing had really been done apart from a once-over with the vacuum cleaner.

OH and me spent 6 hours cleaning the kitchen before we could unpack anything. It was totally GRIM.

I had a feeling that this would happen (as I said in my original post) !!

Anyway, despite the filth, it was worth it. Although I'm still cleaning bit by bit!

I'd have to leave mine clean when we move out as I wouldn't want the people to think we were filthy.
You're always going to get dust etc but I wouldn't want anything foul to be found after I moved out.
We are still waiting to exchange contracts and I have been cleaning and keeping the house tidy as I would do if we were staying.I have even been pruning the garden to make sure it isn't overgrown. I just hope the house we're moving too the people feel the same.

We are moving to our first house in September (hopefully!). It has been empty for a while as the owner has already relocated with work. It isn't filthy, just a bit grimy (where furniture has been there are mark on walls, the oven needs a good clean, as does the bathroom. She may come back to do it before we move in, but if not I'm not too worried as I will want to go over it myself anyway as I'm a clean freak.

We are moving out of a rental property. We have kept it spotless, as has been commented on each time the agent has done an inspection, but I will still be giving it a really good clean when we leave. We are in the process of repainting all the walls (another coat of magnolia), and will be getting the carpets professionally cleaned (even though they shouldn't be that dirty as have never worn shoes in the house).

As every house I've ever sold has been subject to the purchaser chiselling something off the price by making an offer - on once occasion just £100 less than I was asking so they felt big and clever - I NEVER CLEAN when I move out. If they don't like it they can spend the money they saved by paying less than I was asking to hire a gang of cleaners. Guess what - no-one ever complained and I suspect that many never even noticed.

I think the reason nobody complained is they were expecting a reasonable person so never wrote into contract that the house should be clean. You don't need to be a genius to differentiate between what is "reasonably clean" and what is not. You should be ashamed of yourself. Mind-boggling statement.

It's a matter of pride, I would be horrified if any house that I had moved out of was left dirty. Beleive me when I say I have been into some houses in my time as an EA and just been disgusted that people live like that!

People don't often complain that the house has been left dirty they just chalk it up to experience and assume that the person living there before must have been a dirty pig!
My home is usually the House Buying, Renting and Selling Forum where I can be found trying to (sometimes unsucessfully) prove that not all Estate Agents are crooks. With 20 years experience of Sales/Lettings and having bought and sold many of my own properties I've usually got something to say ;)

I've just moved in to a new house and have spents hours and hours and hours cleaning it as it was left filthy. We spent 6 hours cleaning the kitchen and its still not totally done...... I'm not really a housework person but this was disgusting. We have vax'ed the hall carpet 3 times and its still dirty.

I still cleaned my old house from top to bottom. I hated moving in to this house when it was so dirty so why should I cause another person to feel like that by making them move in to a house that wasnt totally clean??!

Same here - except we cleaned as we wanted to, plus the landlady was a nightmare so we wanted to give her no excuse.

However - read the dramatic story that ensued here  :

Hope my situation helps someone else who is renting from a landlord and then gets 'very creative' costs deducted from their deposit.
