To Clean Or Not To Clean?

  • No question, you would hope people would leave a house as they would like to recieve one!! You should make sure the grass isn't too long, and that the bathroon is clean, and a quick going over the carpet/floors with a hoover!!
Will only take a few mins if you are generally a clean person anyway!!!

  • I have 2 rented properties next door to me, owned by the letting agents. They never check these propertiesd when tenants move out, and prey on the desperate to rent them again.
The last people moved out in November and the new lot moved in in January. We as a community have only just got all the rubbish removed by contacting Environmental services. There was so much rubbish, the van had to come twice. We are still waiting for a caravan to be moved that was also owned by the previous tenants.

I also rent amd am buying at the moment, I have no tenancy stating that my house should be left in a clean order when I move, but I have already cleaned my oven, washed paintwork etc. I told my landlord I would repaint, but he said not to bother as he would get the decorators in.

The house I am buying is now being repossessed so god only knows what it would be like when I move in, but again my LL is being good as he says I can overlap the houses at no cost for a week.

I would feel embarrased if I left a mucky house for someone else to move into - you should always leave it as you would like to have found it.

My sister was in a rented flat, and their contract stated they had to re-paint all the walls in magnolia before they left or they would lose their £500 deposit. I think that is a bit extreme.

We moved into our first house and its was filthy and it still had all old furniture in it and a loft full of someones memories but junk to us, the daughter that sold it couldnt care less about anything so it all went in the skip.. I will clean when and if we move and leave a bottle of wine and a few pennies for good luck.
No one said it was going to be easy!!

This is exactly what I did when I sold my parents house after the last of them moved to a residential home. The price reflected it was being 'sold as seen'.

The daughter said that it would be cleared. So not sold as seen, i think for the price of a skip its a bit out of order.

  • I didn't clean the last house we moved out of, as I'd spoken to the new owners-to-be on the phone before they moved in: they were complete t...ers who were very rude to me.... what goes around comes around...... !

well I havent had any choice in the matter as the letting agent gave us precise instructions, so we have done the following in preparation for the big move tomorrow-

    -mowed lawn
    -weeded all flowerbeds
-cleaned oven - now as new
    -washed and ironed all curtains
    -cleaned all windows

and tomorrow I will be cleaning kitchen and bathrooms (3), wiping down all paintwork and hoovering in preparation for the carpets to be steam cleaned (which is costing us £70).

so Id better get my deposit back or else...

When we rented, we had a real shister for an agent. We used their cleaning agent to get the house cleaned, our level would NEVER meet their standards, as they would look for anything wrong to withhold our deposit. They still found fault with their agent's cleaning but stood our ground.

We wanted to mow the lawn/clear the garden but it was a very wet spring and not appropriate to do the garden (it was April!). They withheld £100 of the deposit or we clear the garden in May when it was drier and we had moved out. I decided to let them keep the £100 as we were settling into the new place with it's problems and I GUARANTEE they would have found fault and withheld it.

I wasn't going to waste my time on a house I had left for someone I despised only for them to keep finding fault.

Thankfully this agent doesn't exist any more - I swear they liked to humiliate tenants. They sent really nasty tradesmen to do any work we needed doing for me to deal with alone.

The worst thing is I had bailiffs come to the house because of the owners bad credit record, which affected our rating. I wouldn't let them in as they had no credible ID.

We rented a 5 bedroom unfurnished place, so was at the upper end of the rental scale.

Other agents I have used have been much better. In fact they clean the place for you when you move out so you don't need to.

For houses I own, I ALWAYS make sure it is in a decent state to move into and on the one occasion the house was minging, I was appalled and didn't ever really feel it was clean enough.
