To Clean Or Not To Clean?

My husband and I have just recently bought our first place and it took us three days to clean which took the shine off it being the first house we have owned. We left rented accommodation and although I know everybody likes to clean when they get in somewhere to make it their clean three days is a bit excessive.
This is the first time I have posted on the forum but this just meant a lot and even if it is just a quick clean over the person moving in will be very gratefu, I assure you.0 -

Hi Dora
But sadly a lot of people aren't sensible are they ?
And if these unsensible people hadn't paid the few quid to have their post redirected, they'd never know would they ?

Not to clean your house/flat before handing it to someone else is mind-bogglingly thoughtless, shameless, lazy and self-absorbed - a generation ago most people wouldn't think twice about cleaning their place for the next tenants/buyers. It's not only a matter of pride, but also human decency. I've moved house three times in the last 6 years and always moved into cleaned houses, having expected the opposite. It puts your faith back in human nature to know that someone can be arsed to make an effort. We're supposed to be a civilised species - if you leave your mess for others to clean up you're utterly disgusting. So there.0

Of course you must clean it. regardless of what anyone else does it is common curteousy to leave the property clean. Would you want to live in someone elses filth?
We recently moved house and the couple we bought the house from left it gleaming. I too left my house spotless for the new owners. I would be mortified to not do this.
Having said that, friends of ours bought their house off other friends (not naming any names here!) and the house was really dirty! In this case i would have cleaned and triple cleaned. I saw the dirt first hand and have not looked at the couple in the same way since!
at the end of the day it is entirely up to you, but think of the new people and think how you will feel if your next property is dirty!0 -
As someone who has had the misfortune of moving ino a house that hadn't been cleaned by the previous slob, ahem, owner, I say, clean it, or may you suffer a thousand tortures!!! GGGGRRRRRRR!!
I cleaned my house from top to bottom before we moved. I mean a PROPER clean - ceilings dusted to skirting boards scrubbed. I littlerally left the house with my vacuum cleaner in my hand and vacuumed myself out of the house. It shined like a new pin. I might add that I had endured endless gief from my idiot buyer, but still wouldn't have dreamed of leaving him a dirty house.
I arrived at my new house and found it filthy. They hadn't even vacuumed round or emptied the bins. It broke my heart. It also ruined the 'bonding' process with my new home and a year on we have never felt truly 'at home' here. There was thick grease inside kitchen cupboards, particularly the extractor fan hood, the oven which we had agreed would be left was disgusting, there was even a body brush in the bathroom complete with pubic hair!!. Nothing had been cleaned since probably the last time we had viewed it a few months before.
It states in your terms that the property must be left in clean and tidy condition 'or words to that effect' and you should make sure that you do. I can't tell you the grief it caused me. I almost suffered depression because I was so upset by the whole affair.
In future I will be checking any property I'm purchasing on the day before completion and I won't complete unless the place is clean. Simple as that.
At the very least, clean the toilet and bathroom and kitchen to a high standard, so that it's at least hygenic. It's just the decent thing to do.

When I moved into the house I'm in now (rental) it was DISGUSTING beyond belief!
I'm guessing the last tennent left it in a state to spite the landlady.
I'm going to give it a clean before I leave though. I have my pride!0 -
Ive done the rental, and have moved into some spotless places, but also some dives that took several weeks of cleaning before it was in a state fit to live in - one place the bath was brown when we got the keys, it was white after all the grot had scraped off (three lads who thought cleaning was someone elses job)
our last rental, we cleaned before we moved out but the owner complained that the grotty old kitchen carpet was not clean enough and he insisted it had been new for us even though it hadnt and basically kept our bond - nice NOT
our first owned house had been empty for months when we moved in so nothing done for us, we moved out last year from it, gave it a good clean - to date 6 months after we have moved out - it is still empty - not even builders moved in - so what was the point of all our hard work??
the house we moved into was spotless except for major limescale in the toilet and showerhead - but we forgave them as the rest of the house was so clean - but then i did give the carpets a quick hoover and the kitchen cupboards a clean before the removal men arrived
so yeah - make it clean and tidy, dont leave rubbish but dont overworry if you are generally clean and tidy peopleSee the stars they’re shining brightEverything’s alright tonight0 -
