Thanks for posting up the facts Polly!

What this thread shows are the people who:

    1) Make a genuine mistake
    2) Speed read
    3) Claim they are internet savvy when they are not
    4) Lack responsibility for their own actions and blame anyone apart from themselves
    5) Think that demanding and screaming and shouting are the way forward

If you are 1) 2) or 3) then Amazon as shown on here are very reasonable and refund those who make errors.

If you are 4) or 5) then you are the worst type of consumer, should throw away your computer and get your parents to make purchases on your behalf.

I just can't believe how many people go through the order process, are forced to click to say they've read the above (before they can continue the order process) and agree to it and still come on here shouting that they've been scammed, conned, ripped-off etc.

I said some thing similar to you in an earlier post:

I think there's a number of types of people who buy from Amazon:
    • those who read about Amazon Prime and decide they don't want a free trial
    • those who read about it, decide they'll take advantage of the free trial and cancel before it costs them money
    • those who read about it, decide they'll take advantage of the free trial and then CONCIOUSLY continue with the service and are happy to pay for it
    • those who don't read about it, realise they've been charged, hold their hands up and say 'Whoops, my mistake. Amazon, please may I have my money back'.
    • those who don't read about it, realise they've been charged - and scream con, scam, rip-off etc etc because they can't see what they've done wrong
Personally, I have sympathy with the next-to-last category but the last......sorry, not at all.
Unfortunately the majority of posts on this thread seem to be from the last category - who really should consider very seriously if they in fact are sensible enough to be let loose with a computer and a credit card.

Just like everyone else on here, I had no clue as to what Prime was. Found out it is a months free trial and then you get charged!! Thing is, I last used my Amazon account in March and they've only just charged me for it (30th August) now thats a long month aint it?!!. I simply gave them a ring and explained that i wasn't happy and they immediately sent me an e-mail confirming it was cancelled and confirmation that the £49 they kindly took from me would be returned within 3 working days. I did ephasise to them that they should have a link next to the 'free delivery' option (which you used to trigger the activation) that explains that you are signing up to pay them 50 quid a year. Hopefully if more people do this then they may make changes to the account!!! :)

I also got caught out by this and only found out when I checked my credit card statement. I cancelled the subscription and Amazon emailed me to say they will refund the £49 which is good but I think Amazon should adopt a policy where they send a confirmation email to customers. That way any misunderstandings could be rectified early.

Yes - when you clicked the line that said Upgrade my order and start my Free Trial now instead of the box that said prime-no-thanks-85x27._V192252603_.gif ?

Don't you understand what a Free Trial is?

I thought it had to be household members whom it could be shared with?

I've been giving Amazon Prime some consideration over the last few weeks as I appear to have used Amazon quite a lot this year and we still have Christmas to come. :o I was intrigued to see that you could share the membership and thought I could add, say, my mum and dad to the account. But after reading into it, I can't.
If you purchase an Amazon Prime membership, you may also invite up to four eligible family members living in your household (at the same address) as registered guests to enjoy your Amazon Prime membership at no extra cost.

I'd be interested to know how people are circumventing this condition.

They do. I signed up for Prime today (needed a book ASAP, will probably cancel it next month). I got two e-mails from Amazon. One is to confirm my order. The second is to welcome me to Prime. You can't miss it. The subject clearly says, 'Amazon Prime Free Trial Membership Confirmation'. The e-mail then explains the details of the service. It's even colour-coded for your convenience.

What more do you want from them?

I used the prime membership in the run up to last christmas and very good it was too. I cancelled before the months trial was up. Recently they asked me to have another trial, which Im on at the moment and its is great to get stuff the next day and free of charge but I shall cancel again before the month as £50 seems a lot of postage, though probably I would spend that amount over a year.
  • i recieved the amazon prime charge today after forgetting to cancel my free trial. i followed the instructions to cancel & be refunded as i havent used amazon at all since the one time on the free trial. however after clicking the cancel button it lead straight to a screen that only stated 'thanks for canceling' nothing was mentioned about a refund and ive recieved no emails. im slightly concerned. its late & the customer services lines are not open yet. is this normal?

'Demand a refund from Amazon'. Telephone 0800 496 1081 and tell them you'll be off to use Play.com if you dont get an immediate refund and also make sure they cancel the Prime membership..
