Quite - was he never taught not to open other peoples mail?! Surely these days everyone is aware of the sort of identity theft scams that are out there - what on earth was he thinking of!

  • My husband received a letter from Telogram today, acting on behalf of Capital One, seeking to verify that he lived at this address.

The only difference here to the other posters so far is that yes DH does have an exisiting CapOne debt, and he has corresponded with them from this address on several occassions since moving here in February as the debt is part of a DMP.

Why then would they now be seeking to verify the address? Is it worth contacting them or should we just ignore?

  • I have just received a letter with TELOGRAM acting on behalf of a company called capquest making enquires about a previous address looking to update their information, after reading recent stories I am going to ignore this as I have never heard of crapquest but a understand they may have been sold a debt over 10 years old which may be statute barred, could anyone help in this matter as am concerned at some stories about their means to reclaim debts intimidating and threatening behaviour thank u.
  • Just ignore it completely, do not even think of replying
  • I received a further letter this morning from H L Legal on another one of their fishing trips with further deadlines and intimidating threats how can this company crapquest be allowed to operate in this way surely somebody should investigate them and put them out of business once and for all, I just feel sorry for people who actually pay these morons thanks roger am goin to ignore all letters but keeping them as evidence.
  • I too have had this lot contacting me.

Basically, in my late teens/early 20's in the mid 90's, I ran up some debt with Abbey (who coincidentally I worked for at the time & today would possibly be deemed as irresponsible lending, but that's another story) totalling about 10k.

Around 98-99, I was fortunate enough to receive a few grand to pay these debts off - so I sent an offer letter to Abbey, asking if they would accept 60/70% of the balance, as full and final settlement to which they agreed. Cheque sent & cleared and without prejudice letter received from Abbey advising closure. All done and dusted I thought, massive weight off shoulders time!

Imagine my surprise, when the 'my client is trying to contact you' letter from Telogram is received at the debt address (where I haven't lived since 1999) a few weeks ago - which I advised the person to open and subsequently send back advising Not Known at this Address. Two weeks ago, 2 letters received from CapQuest advising they had bought debt from Abbey and were offering a 50% discount on the amounts if I paid immediately. These were also sent back as not known. Again, thought that shoud be the end of it.

But no, today at my 4th address since the debt, I receive the Telogram letter again. To say I'm narked is an understatement. Can they use the Experian database as a search engine?

Bottom line is, am going to ignore all communications from them and in the meantime, hope I can find the original without prejudice letters from Abbey, so that I can a) go to the OFT, re: harassment & possible misuse of position and b) the FSA to ask why Abbey didn't close the account and why did they sell on without trying to contact me first, where it could of been sorted.

Good luck all - hopefully with enough complaints, one day these debt bullies will finally get their commupance and the OFT will start regulating these people more closely - from all the posts on google, this situation has been going on for far too long now.

I had a letter from them today acting on behalf of CapQuest. It was for a debt of 20 years ago. Can they do this?

I must admit I bit and called them, but told them they couldn't pursue me for such an old debt. I hope I'm right.
  • Having followed the advice on this thread & sent them the letter denying all knowledge of the debt, I have heard nothing more.

Just photocopy the letter and send it to the OFT.
