Hello, I wish I had come to this site earlier today before I was foolish enough to phone this company regarding their letter. I was even more foolish as to give my DOB when asked. I was then transferred to CapQuest & told it related to debt going back to 2001. My name was spelt wrongly on the letter & I am pretty sure that I don't owe the money. What can I do?

    Hi

if this debt relates to an account which has not been paid for more than six years (5 in Scotland) then it is statute barred and you do not have to pay it. Crapquest specialise in buying up this sort of unenforceable debt and trying to trick people into paying them.

Unless you paid today or gave them your account details, you have nothing to fear.

Just send a statute barred letter and ruin someones day at Crapquest. Loads of folk here will cheer.
If you've have not made a mistake, you've made nothing
  • Hi, My son had one of these letters today. It says they (Telogram) are the authorised agent for CapQuest Investment Ltd and are trying to establish the current residential address of (my son) whose last known address was - and then gives an address in Cornwall. My son has never lived in Cornwall, he has always lived at home with us in Kent.
The letter goes on to say that he should contact them on 0870 084 2555 by 16 March so that information can be verified.
Should we ignore this letter and see if anything else turns up.

Yes, ignore them. They're on a fishing expedition.

    Any contact merely encourages them.

    This site is amazing

I had a letter today from Telogram addressed to me in my previous name (been married for 2.5 years) advising me that they had a message for me and to contact them on 01252 576376 as the message will be deleted on 1st May.

To be honest I thought it was a simple phone scam but I thought I'd google it anyway and here I am, back again on my favourite website.

Now I can say categorically that I have no debts and never have done, I am waaaay to tight to pay interest :p (my OH has Canadian debts but he is dealing with it through a representative in Canada and it's in my maiden name anyway). I have lived, rented out and now live again at this address so it's been attached to me for 17 years.

I do know that one of the last people to rent had money problems but that was over 4 years ago (I recently sent back an official looking letter from a local solicitor with a case number on view through the address window as not known at this address for at least 4 years - I initialled it with my now name which is different from my maiden name - habit :o and dated it). This letter was not in my name - it was definitely the former occupants.

Now should I ignore it, it seems from this thread that it will escalate. Or should I complain to OFT at this point?

I'm tempted to complain about these underhand tactics as like I say, I am 100% sure I do not owe money to anyone (I occasionally borrow from my daughters' piggy banks but I always put in an IOU ;))

Or shall I just phone them (hate to think of wasting the phone money though) and give a big sigh and ask them what debt they think I owe?

    What do you guys think?

    I'd let them delete it.

I wouldn't respond to it, thats what they want, it gives them proof that you live at the address, which is why they send out the letters. Even if you don't have debts, ignore it, and bin it!

Thanks for the responses bjb and fb - I'll definitely not be responding to these letters - I'm still undecided on the ignoring part though :p

I have today received the second letter from H L Legal, dated 29th April and signed by an H Legal :D. CapQuest is mentioned on the back of the letter and it is full of legalese about whether information held is relevant to me.

Couldn't resist reporting the first letter to consumer direct and have now reported the second to them too.

I won't be responding directly to them but I don't think I'll bin the letters yet either.

If anyone can think of anywhere else I can report them too then I'm more than happy. I know I have no old debts/current debts to worry about and letters like this make me very angry as its not much different from a phishing email. More vulnerable people though may not be so sure and might get caught into paying for debts that do not belong to them or are long since statute barred.

Any little bit I can do to try and stop these charlatans is time well spent in my opinion.

  • My Father in law brought a Telogram letter to us today. It was addressed to an address my wife lived at 15 years ago. The whole letter shouted "scam" at me, with requests for current whereabouts and a requirement to respond by 31st July to verify the info or the record would be moved to the investigation unit.

I would have just binned it but then the Father in law dropped the bombshell "oh I phoned them and told them your new address". I thought you fool - he is even now convinced that my wife made some investments that she has forgotten about! Who would have thought people could be that gullible?

I am not concerned as we know that we owe nothing but could do without any potential hassle. Reading all of the above on this wonderful site it looks like I should just forget it for now and see if they ever actually contact us again?
