Telogram Ltd is a scam company run by Capquest Debt Recovery. Very fond of trying to make people pay debts that aren't theirs.

    If in doubt, challenge them.

    Hi,

    Thats interesting to know!

We receive a lot of debt collector letters for a previous owner at our address, (she has outstanding debt for a least Sky & a Car), today we received two letters, the Telogram letter, saying a message was waiting and would expire on the 16th october, which i just sent back with 'NOT AT THIS ADDRESS' writen all over. I had thought about phoning the number, glad I didn't now, don't want them to think she still lives there. Plus I don't see why I should waste my phone bill calling them to expain she doesn't live here any more.

We also received a letter for the Sky debt, we've had 2 or 3 before, last one about a week or 2 ago, which again I sent back with 'NOT AT THIS ADDRESS MOVED TO SCOTLAND IN 03' writen all over. But the letter started 'Due to no resolution from our previous contact attempts' and at the bottom it said 'Ignoring this letter will only make things worse, contact us before we have to send a collector' or something to that wording. Should I phone and explain, or send it back again?

I'm interested in how they would get other people to pay debts that aren't theirs? No way will they get me to pay hers.

I keep worrying that a collector will turn up on our door step and demand payment, even though she moved out 3 years ago. Anyone have any suggestions if they do? I don't want them trying to break into our house, or car!

    Cheers

If they do, you need to show them (photo) id to prove you're not the person they want, and also proof of when you moved into the house (tenacy agreement etc). This should be enough to get them off your case.

I hope so, but I watched that BBC program a couple of weeks back, 'Whistleblower' I think it's called, and the debt collectors were doing some dodgy stuff, like going to a house where the bloke no longer lived, and tried to get money out the current owners, or breaking and entering etc
I don't want them towing/clamping one of our cars, while were not at home!

One interesting thing I noticed, is the Sky debt letter says 'Original debt property' or something, and it's not our current address. So they must have found out she lived at our address somehow. I know when we moved in she wasn't with Sky, but had NTL.

One other thing, we DO have Sky installed (no outstanding debt), so you'd think they would be able to match up the address, and see she doesn't live here any longer! I hope the debt collector doesn't try to nick our dish (or clamp it ;) ) while we're out!

You are under absolutely no obligation to show anything to these people. Neither do they have right of entry into your house. The debt is not yours and if there is any onus of proof it should be with these people who are harrassing you, to prove otherwise.
Have a look on the insolvency website - they have a section about debt collectors/bailiffs - this is not the exact link, but it will take you there: Also have a look on the OFT website to see the guidelines on how DCA's should behave.

I wouldn't worry too much, there will be a letter from a court addressed to her first. When that one is sent back the court will ask the parties trying to collect the debt to show recent proof of address. Which will automatically show that they are not living in that house and the case will be thrown out!

This is possibly a better link, as my original link is more specifically about bailiffs (same meat - different gravy):

  • Thanks for the link rog2, it makes an interesting read, especially this section:
a creditor will be committing an offence if...the creditor pretends to be someone they are not

How does that fair with this whole 'TELOGRAM' scam? Surely they are pretending to be something they are not?
