Reflecting on this I think it has been a grave error for people to ask the question of Coventry Building Society. In asking them the question it has raised an issue and flagged something that would have probably laid doormant.

Sometimes it is actually better to simply assume.

Clearly the Coventry are doing one thing for some and another thing for others.

I got my call from a "supervisor" yesterday evening, and even after a long discussion regarding the rights and wrongs of their policy on this issue, I was told that there would be no way I could open a 50 plus (6) account.

This evening at about the same time, I received another call, from the same "supervisor" who said they had "in the light of customer feedback" changed their policy and they were sending me an application form for the said 50 plus (6)!

So maybe they do care about their customers, or is it that many customers have already moved elsewhere?

I think they've realised that a) they've p*ss*d off a lot of customers and b) they are losing a lot of funding...

Good to see the complaints to The Coventry but it won't make any difference. I went through the complaints process a while ago ending up with the CEO and got much the same reply. I asked why would The Coventry rather see savers withdrawing their funds than allowing them to switch to another account? Never did get an answer other than 'it's the rules'.

I have had exactly the same reply as G_M, they are allowing me to open an Issue 6, forms in the post. I did say my OH had one as well and we both wanted to open an Issue 6 but if they only send one form then he will put his with mine.

Thanks Alared for mentioning the possible postal strike, I did not know about this, so I will take the advice to use recorded delivery when I return the forms.

I think they must have had a lot of emails/calls from unhappy 50plus/60plus holders, most likely as a result of this thread. Good to see that they have taken notice.

Ditto as per previous postings, e-mail viz

However, we feel it's extremely important to listen to our members and
act on what they tell us. We've listened to your feedback and
understand the strength of feeling. As a direct result we've decided to
stop offering 50 Plus eSave (6), but under the circumstances I am happy
for you to apply for and invest in 50 Plus eSave (6) if you still wish
to do so. We are posting an application pack to you under separate
cover. Please be aware that your completed application must reach us by
close of business on Wednesday 15 July.

Well done to all fellow complainers. Keep up the good work !

Postal strikes will affect all mail, including recorded delivery stuff.

Yes Steve, but I interpreted Alared's previous post

This is correct, and also bear in mind that that there MAY be a postal strike in Coventry shortly and I was advised to send the application by recorded delivery,so they would have proof of the date posted and also show that an effort was made to get it there by the 15th.

as Coventry BS have advised using recorded delivery as proof of when the application forms were posted so that in the event that they arrive later than the 15th they will still honour their promise to allow an issue 6 to be opened as it will show that every effort will have been made by the applicant to get the forms back on time.

The account that I originally linked to has been withdrawn, therefore no longer available. This is the reason that you are now linking to some other page.
