I'm racking my brains for a fedge so pass the kettle please.
I've grown Cotoneaster horizontalis as a shrub against a wall but does anyone know if a line of them would stay upright if I took the support away?
Scuse me, don't move, that's one of my brain cells by your foot there. No longer half of Optimisticpair

Morning
Dark clouds and sunshine here so we are expecting heavy showers.
Primrose - I plan to move seeds for successive sowing into the next box once the first sowing is done. I though if each box had a card in and then seeds which had been sown were moved to behind the card then I could keep track. I might even make it an index card with dates and varieties but that may be for next year!
Hoping to find a few windows to dig up some of the rampant asters to give to a friend and I'm trying to decide on removing the aged miscanthus and replacing with sunflowers and/or sweetcorn. The birds of sadness may fly overhead but don't let them nest in your hair0 -
Interesting to learn how different people store their seed packets. I thought about storing mine in order of date sowing but find this doesn't work so easily if you use successional sowing. So mine are filed in two plastic clip-it boxes marked 1 & 2 in alphabetical order. But then I have the dilemma of whether to file Endive under E for Endive, or L for Lettuce And do I store Peppers under C for Capicums or P for Peppers ?
Easy to find what you want then.Freedom is not worth having if it does not include the freedom to make mistakes.0 -
Seed filing. Its quite idiosyncratic so maybe wouldn't suit anyone else. Have been kept a weekly note for few years so (fairly) up on what needs sowing.
It's more about locating what's wanted and keeping the large numbers of varieties grown in top notch condition so they stay viable for a number of years
Have 4 suitably sized and coloured tupperware boxes that live in a fridge.
Fruiting veg: that is tomatoes, peppers chillies, courgettes, corn, pumpkins. Once sown for the season the box can then stay sealed.
Lettuces: endive chicory. Plus one packet for elderly odds n ends tipped in together to be used up.
Flowers: Hot faves bundled by type/sowing order, 'start earlies', 'april indoors', hardy annuals sown direct, biennials to sow May, autumn sowings. The rest lurk and may get stirred together and used if they are lucky.
Veg: in elastic bands by type:- radishes, roots, carrots, onions, spinaches, other leafy greens, herbs. Brassicas also have a crib sheet with sowing dates & are put to the back of the bundle once sown.

Morning, Morning
Sorry, I've been up since 6ish and out since 7am getting ready for Man-with-Skip and Man-with-Digger-and-a-Breaker arriving to help me with the heavy work. My mate has been round at 8 but TBH I can't see them starting the job today.
I've been testing soil depth where it looks better but there are not many places I can get a border spade in more than 4 inches without hitting a big stone. Also been lifting, cutting back and slug hunting.
Dry if cool but just nice to work in. Most of the plants I containerised are safely nestled up alongside the house wall.
SEED FILING SYSTEM Large marg tub at the mo and a small lidded plastic box in the bottom of the fridge for things not being sown again. No longer half of Optimisticpair

I need a kick. I seem to have lost my gardening mojo.
I have sweet peas needing to go out, lots of stuff needs potting on and I can't be bothered. I think the lack of sun and warmth is keeping me indoors.0 -
Just reading this and wondering if we have a weird local weather thing going on. Despite being "opp north" the sun is out the birds and bees are doing their thing and I have been pottering around the GH and even had to water the hanging baskets and some of my pots!
Washing out on the line drying nicely as well and blue skies all around.
Mind you was quite cool although sunny when the kids went off to school, not the hottest of days but I have been outside in just a t shirt.
Found a few strawberries growing today on my earlier fruiting varieties, fair sized already but still green obviously, was thinking of having a brew outside to be honest lol.
We are in Lancashire, but seem to avoid late frosts and the recent snow seemed to be lighter and less long lived here although defo get our fair share of rain usually-not had much recently perhaps its a government conspiracy rofl. OH mowed the grass at weekend and we had the barbie on for DD1's BD yesterday.
Anyone else had a half decent BH or do I live in a wormhole lol. Not the best Mayday bank hol ever but not been too bad really. Feeling guilty after reading this thread.

Mixed salad which I planted thurs/fri (can't remember, must be my age) is sprouting through already ! Second lot of spring onions also doing well.
Nice day here in the midlands one dog is at present lying in the sun, the other in the shade, a much nicer day than yesterday." I would not change you for the world, but I would change the world for you"

I feel guilty too as it's been t-shirt weather here as well since lunchtime. I'm 600ft up in West Wales 25 road miles inland and facing south.
I've just been gassing with a neighbour who says round the corner by the river where it is open it was frosty at 8am this morning - surprised me as my garden at 8am was cool but no frost.
We had 10 or 12 days without rain then four really wet days, one it hailed, and had a thunderstorm on Saturday afternoon. It's been fairly dry Sunday and Monday and much better today. Bees are out.
Winter was another long freeze and some snow. I think the "last frost" date here is around mid to the end of May. I remember it snowed in early June in Yorkshire one year though. No longer half of Optimisticpair
