    Morning all

We've had much needed rain overnight so hopefully the butts are replenishing. Hoping it stops in a bit as I have some planting out to do.

Has anybody planted their dahlias yet? I usually start mine in buckets to get them going and give them a chance against the slugs. A couple which have stayed in large pots all winter are starting to shoot but I have the rest to do.

I planted some garlic last year (just cloves from a supermarket bulb). They now have long green shoots - how do I know when they are ready or will they acutally grow into new garlic?

WestonDave hope the paint has turned white. DH has been doing outside maintenance and replaced the coldframe glazing and the broken playhouse window yesterday plus chopped up a large pile of wood which was just dumped blocking the woodstore and garden wheelie bin. I too have a sandpit which is nolonger used to sort out. It is sunken and made of sleepers and I'm not sure what to turn it into.

  • Good afternoon all!!

There's a large wasp in my 4 tier greenhouse that I've given up on trying to get out now so thought I'd sit down with a cuppa and read up on the threads.

Was glad to see a little rain earlier. Went outside and my new creeping phlox have gone all crunchy and brown :( hopefully the rain will pick them up a bit!!
Ahhhh.... lemony fresh victory is mineee!!!

Hooray it's raining here in sunny cheshire, well heavy showers more than rain, but i don't mind. Well i was going to fix my new water butt to the green house today, but got stuck into the ironing instead, silly me.

How long do mangetout take to germinate, had mine in loo rolls for just over a week now, no sign of life yet.
  • My Elephant Garlic is doing exactly the same, nothing! :( Trying to decide wether to leave it or dig it up and use the container for something else.

    Snowball

I've had a look at veg growing fora. Folks are generally saying plant in autumn as if you plant Feb, as I did, you may not see any sign of life until May. I potted all four on only because one had rooted and I'm hoping to get stuff in the open ground soon.

Anybody know anything about reproducing Golden Marjoram? Have got a visitor staying this week-end who has asked for a cutting of my herb. I've cut some snippings off it now it's starting to grow after the winter and put them in a pot of compost hoping that they will "take" at this time of year, but as I bought the oriignal plant from a garden centre I've no idea whether this will work. Any help out there please?

Bah...needed the rain, but NOT TODAY. The fence was lovely and dry to paint...and I only managed to do half yesterday. How long do you think it will take to dry out enough to finish the job? Or (she adds hopefully), does it not matter so much if I'm using a water-based treatment???

I collected about 40 litres overnight hooray.

I don't know about mangetout specifically but peas are supposed to germinate in 7-10 days. Should you presoak them by the way?

laurel - frustrating though it is, it's probably better to wait until the fence is dried out otherwise you might end up making the mistake I made a couple of years ago. I was impatient to get a new fence coated and started putting Cuprinol on it after a heavy shower had stopped. The mixture went on very streakily and I'm now lumbered with looking at a fence which has varying different green shades depending on where the fence was wettest as the mixture seemed to get diluted as I put it on.

My ordinary (not mangetout) garden peas took about eight days to germinate - that was in the garden soil rather than in pots in protected greenhouse.

Sigh...I think I'm going to get streaky anyway, as the new bottle of Cuprinol is far, far runnier and coats very differently to the last two...I can't believe the difference. But you're right. I'd better leave it.
