Help! - housemate denying me internet access = theft?

Options
Hi all, any advice would be very apprecitated,

I live in a shared house and the internet access is provided by the landlord to whom we pay all eqially pay the cost.

The router is in my hosemate's room, he has unplugged my cable and refuses to re-connect me. (long story)

Is what he is doing theft? We all pay equal share for the internet cost and he is denying me access to it :(

Thanks in advance

Talk to the landlord asap. If you're all paying equal then you have rights to it.

    Yeah, what he said.

And tell your housemate to stop being such a baby

ETA: Assuming he hasn't disconnected you for downloading kiddie pr0n or similar, obviously :D

Already have, the lanlord has told him that he cannot control the internet access in any way. The housemate is being evicted (10th July) (because of this & other behaviour) but landlord is out of the country till the 8th right now - I know I could wait it out but it's difficult not having net access from home :( - I do a lot on-line and can't anymore ... it's like loosing your connection to the world :(

Could I take legal action against my housemate? in the eye's of the law is what he is doing theft?

    thanks

Need to speak to the LL again, really - get them to send a friend round and deal with it, or something. being out of the country isn't an excuse - what would they do if the place burnt down? Say "I'll deal with it next week"?

The police aren't going to be even slightly interested in this and I'd have thought you'd struggle convincing a lawyer it was worth even writing a letter.

Is the broadband mentioned in your contract with the LL? If so, I'd tell him that you're going out and getting a wireless broadband adapter for the short term and you're billing them for the cost.

Turn the electric off and see how he likes it.

Seriously don't you need it for the fridge and freezer but you know what I mean.

Its obvious he's just being spiteful as he is leaving. Can you talk to him, reason with him maybe?

I would tell him but he just walks away if you try to talk to him .. a big baby with allright..

He disconnected me because he found me trying to repair the internet connection on the router which is in his room.. It hadn't worked for a day, he wasn't home so we thought we'd rty to figure out what the problem was.. he came home as I was doing this and pulled out my cable and told me to not go in to his room again..

I would have thought that if I was paying for something and that a person was prevening me acess to that something I'd paid for then that would be an offence in some way?

Nope not mentioned in contract, just verbal. Getting own wireless adapter won't work, hosemate has installed his own router, all internet traffic goes through his machine so getting a wireless adapter won't help.

    Thanks for the reply :money:

Yep done the electric trick already. Have figured out which switch to flick to just turn off the power to the upstairs sockets.. maybe I'll give that switch a few flicks this evening..

Tried talking and reasoning with him.. but no joy, he refuses to communicate, won't respond when knocking on his door and just walks away if you try to talk to him..

    Does the router wireless.?

Most wireless routers are default settings, and you could lock out his MAC address.
