That's excellent Louise. Being out of work does make you edgy about references etc, so much rides on them.

When you start back in work, you'll probably find you are a lot more conscientious than you have ever been too. Employers are getting a great deal from their employees at the moment. Employer's market et al.
I learned that courage was not the absence of fear, but the triumph over it. The brave man is not he who does not feel afraid, but he who conquers that fear.

yeah I agree - I dont know whats happened to me recently - have been really paranoid and on edge. Its such a horrible feeling, but it will work in my advantage because I will work extra hard when I get this job.

Hi all. I hope you don't mind if I join this thread. I couldn't work out what it was from the title for weeks, then tonight I decided to have a look and it looked really interesting!

I'm looking for work at the moment and not having a great time of it. I vary from being quite confident to extremely despondent about the chances of me ever finding another job again! I had an interview last week for an admin job that I really wanted. It paid £13,000 when my last job paid £20,000 but I'm willing to work for less money (even though I live in London and just earning that might mean I never move out of my parents' house!). Anyway, the interview went really well, and I was pretty confident that I'd done well enough and that I might get it. They phoned me the next day to tell me that they'd given it to someone with more relevant experience. I have two years' admin experience, so was pretty upset to find that people even more experienced than me were applying for such poorly paid jobs! Since then basically all I have done is eat pistachio nuts!!!

I'm hoping being able to feed back to you lot every day or two might help me get out of this hole!

    Welcome Lollypop!!
I am the same - go from being confident to totally depressed. Its good to come and chat on this thread with people who know exactly what it feels like. I have applied for jobs that I know I could do with my eyes shut, but have not got them. So annoying. Youve come to the right place my love :D

Agree with your sentiments about job centre staff rosered. It's such a great feeling to sign off. Enjoy the moment.

Funnily enough, I've got an interview tomorrow for a job that I've applied for a couple of times before and not had a response. Just four hours a week but decent hourly rate and PAYE with holidays. If I get this job, I will stop there. Fingers will be in enough pies. Any more to fend off this insecurity and I think I'll refer myself for counselling

My tax return for this year will be a nightmare:eek:

I am set up as self employed for mystery shopping/surveys /cleaning/deliveries etc. A limited company for accounts and debt collecting and if I get tomorrows job, two PAYE jobs. I'm only working about 25/30 hours a week though and it fits around the family, so I am not complaining.

Good luck for the interview tomorrow Scrooge! :) I can see that your tax situation is a bit complicated! XX

    Hi Lollypop,

Agree it's so frustrating to go for interviews, where you know, and the employer know that you could do the job standing on your head and be a real asset, but someone pips you at the post.

I took a circuitous route back into employment after giving up applying for management jobs in the finance sector, when my JSA stopped after six months.

From what I have observed, people are getting jobs, but often earn 30%+ less than what they were getting previously.

I suppose it is a bit like selling your house, buyers are out there but they are looking for a terrific deal and are spoilt for choice!
I learned that courage was not the absence of fear, but the triumph over it. The brave man is not he who does not feel afraid, but he who conquers that fear.

Good luck Lollipop. :) I know exactly what you mean. I have spent months trying to find work in the same field and salary as my last job (about 26K). Now I am getting all excited about a part time job that pays £6 an hour! I think Scrooge is right - it's an employer's market at the moment, but even if you take a low paid job for now, you can always move on when the recession lifts. :)

Well I got my wee job.

A really nice lady interviewed me, the District Manager. I start this one in two weeks time, and i'm excited too Rosered.

The last time I sent a CV through for this job, it was a dumbed down version. I naively thought I was overqualified. I heard nothing. This time I sent the whole caboodle, making a real effort to tie it in with the job description, with covering letter etc. and got an interview straight away. Times are a changing and I'm just having to adapt.

As Rosered says, when/if the market picks up, we can adapt again.

Great Scrooge! Congratulations! :) I knew you would have something else soon - such a positive attitude! XX
