In case it is of help:

2/7/09: Applied for 5 year fixed rate account (choosing option for money to be taken by direct debit on 16/7/09). Confirmation email received.

6/7/09: Received letter confirming direct debit being set up

9/7/09: Applied for online saver. Confirmation email received.

11/7/09: received user ID in post. Logged in. Can see both accounts. Made test payment of £1 to online saver. Not yet showing in account. Edit: Goes through faster payments but via an NBS holding account (?) and appeared in account on Monday 13/7/09 which is the next working day after I made the transfer.

Note when I opened the online saver I typed the reference number from the direct debit confirmation letter into the existing account number field (which we now know is not the account number) but they still seem to have married up the two accounts above. And seems to be an online option to transfer from the online saver to the fixed rate.

Very impressed with their efficiency at NBS (Tesco take note!!!) :T

Let's hope they survive as an independent building society.

    Similar situation for me.

08/07/09 -Applied for 5 year fixed rate account, also opting for direct debit to be taken (17/7/09). Confirmation email received.

09/07/09 -Applied for Online Saver Account. Confirmation received.

11/07/09 -Received Welcome letter, direct debit confirmation & user ID.

Yet to log in and have a look.

Very impressed with Newcastle speed of opening.

I chose for the 5 year initial payment to be taken from my N & P account, as there was quite a bit of money in there earning only 2%.
This will now be my nominated account.

Does anyone know if, after the direct debit has gone through, I can change my nominated account?
Would prefer to use my Nationwide Flex in future. Didn't use this initially, as it would have taken three days to transfer funds from N & P to Nationwide and didn't want to miss this 5 year account.

Anyone know a direct geographic tel number (or better still freephone) for NBS investment centre? Their switchboard 0191 244 2000 only operates 9-5 and I'm fed up waiting on hold for their 0845 number to answer! (yes, I've tried saynoto0870)

I don't know but, intuitively, this must be possible. Just ring them up and they'll probably send you a form or something.

You can delete the Nominated account online and download a DD form on the Newcastle site to send off.

I tried the direct no. to savings dept found on saynoto0870 but got a message saying it's not in use.

    Just one more query.

The welcome letter has a paragraph heading 'You could win £500 by answering questions about yourself'

The envelope for returning the questionnaire was in the welcome envelope contents - but no questionnaire.
    Anyone received this questionnaire?
Might have filled it in - depending on what they want to know.

Thanks, problem is I am in Hong Kong until end of August. I doubt they would call long distance.

Calling their 0845 no. from HK will cost a fortune so I called their Switch board no. and asked to be put through to savings.

I am so glad that I already hold a Newcastle Internet account meaning that I can open the Bond without needing to send further ID.

Thanks. Don't know how you found this as there's no link on their 'contact' page to 'callme'.

And it doesn't work too well! Just had a call back from 'click-to-call' and had a recording saying they called Newcastle BS and could not get an answer!

    Direct geo number anyone?
