I think she should substitute, but only after making sure he honestly likes it. My Nan swapped gave me mashed sprouts once and told me it was cabbage as I used to hate sprouts. I ate it but thought it was disgusting but didn't want to hurt my Nan's feelings so pretended the 'cabbage' was nice. She triumphantly told me what it really was and to this day my family still don't believe me when I tell them I didn't say it was horrible because I didn't want to upset my Nan !

This is a Rubbish dilemma!! You cant compare any mayo to hellmans so this would never happen! im not a brand snob quite the oppisite but 2 things i wont buy cheap is bread and mayo! any1 that likes mayo even abit could tell a massive differance!!!
Maybe you can tell one from another but OP says Ashley can't tell the difference.

If my missus started deceiving me like that then I would be wondering what else she was deceiving me about.

Furthermore I would be wondering what she was doing with the rest of the housekeeping money.

Seems like she is treading on very thin ice here.

    .

scotsbob Try going shopping with your wife your soon see what she is doing with the rest of the housekeeping money.

How petty to deceive someone over a jar of mayo, I'd wonder what else she would deceive me about if I found out, thankfully I can't stand the stuff myself so I won't suffer this dilemma!
I must, I must, get my post average up to 1 a day!! :D

I did this with my sons for years, filling up the Heinz ketchup bottles etc with cheaper brands. They twigged somewhere along the line, but started treating it as one of my little foibles. They are old enough to buy their own now. My husband however will only eat HP brown sauce, and can tell in an instant if I substitute it.

If I was responsible for the shopping and money was really that tight I'd offer three options:
    1. You can do without mayonaise for a while
    2. You can have the value brand
    3. You can buy your own mayo out of your beer/pocket money and get whatever brand you like.

I have my own little fussinesses, I'm sure we all do, but I don't expect other people in my household to pay for them (I love my fancy toiletries, whereas most men think there's nothing wrong with soap and water - but I wouldn't put them on the joint shopping list). This is why you have the "housekeeping" money, from which you buy mutually agreed essentials, and each person has an agreed amount of pocket money, which they use to buy whatever they want - if mayonaise is that important to Ashley, I'm sure he won't mind forking out for it himself.

Yes! Bur remember to buy a new jar of the real stuff ocassionaly so the label stays clean. Our shopping bill is always twice what it needs to be when my husband shops with me and we throw away more food waste as his "wants" are always more than we can sensibly eat.

Congratulations to the "home made" posters - just look at Hellmans list of contentents and then work our you own egg and olive oil "real" mayo. - can be a bit tricky though to get it right. Then you can make your own coleslaw too.

I agree about Branston Beans, they're great (like Heinz were before they cut down on the sugar and salt).

And you get more "food" in the can:

Just bloody tell him! Why lie? It's only an issue if he disagrees!

No point deceiving people into doing anything - that's no way to run anything, let alone a marriage.

Fussiness is pointless I agree, but no need to bend over backwards for people, just buy it from now on as he hasnt complained, and if he really wants it he can get his own mayo as others have said
