MONEY MORAL DILEMMA. Should Cheryl substitute Ashley’s mayo?

  • The mayo is a smoke screen...it could be any product. The problem is, supermarkets will not tell us who makes their 'own brands' so, even though they may 'taste' the same we don't know whether they are full of crap or produced in Indian sweat shops.

As I am a self-confessed brand snob, joking colleages some time ago challenged me to identify Heinz ketchup against others. I didn't need to taste....I recognised Heinz by its lack of bright e-number colours. My daughter, thirty something, has become a 'brand snob' and has now kicked Tesco's into touch and shops, as I do, at Waitrose.

She should carry on without him knowing for the time being and a few months later, she should tell him. Hopefully he'll realise that he was being silly and stuck up before.

Changing mayo without telling her husband hardly makes her evil!

My OH is a bit of a Nescafe snob. He won't accept even trying other stuff and I've tried a couple of times to subsitute nescafe for stuff on offer etc and he always spotted the taste even when I mix it all up in the coffee canister, sometimes because it is a different shade of brown :rotfl:

He hasn't mentioned once a taste in difference after I bought a big Tesco jar of their 'Classic Coffee' which was flagged as a 'cheaper alternative' to Nescafe when I did an online shop and I've been adding it quite liberally to the canister - it's even the same colour as nescafe - I don't think he has noticed ;)

My dad couldn't tell the difference between a supermarket Irish Whiskey and Jamesons. He blamed temporary tastebud problems. I seriously thought about decanting the supermarket brand into a Jamesons bottle!
Oh and when newly married and broke, I made a 'steak' pie with beef cheek bought from a butchers selling pet food. Hubby wolfed it down and never knew why I wasn't hungry that night...
BTW, has anyone noticed that Hellemans olive oil mayonnaise has disappeared from the shelves?

With those you probably could tell but with a lot of things quite honestly you can't. Value things are a lot better than they used to be.

Yes, I eat loads of own brand stuff. I do still go for Birds Eye burgers though, on the rare occasion that I buy them!
  • Sorry, but both Asda 'Smart Price' and Tesco 'Value' mayonnaise are vile.
    Sainsbury's basic is ok ;-)

Anyway downshifting brands doesn't mean picking up the Basic/Value/Smart Price. You could always get the one in the middle?!

Just get him to do the taste test.
If he can honestly taste the difference, then he can stay with his current brand.
I got my OH to do the taste test. She was convinced she could tell the difference - but now we she fills the trolley with value stuff, and even checks the "cost per 100g" on the price tickets!

The only stuff we don't buy value is loo roll, pasta sauce, and cola (because i'm allergic to the aspartame in cheap cola ;) )

yes, cheryl should use the cheap mayo. I swap things on a regular basis, aldi extra virgin olive oil, decanted into a filipo berio bottle. this was used by hubby ok, with no complaints so bought another bottle, which he then complained about!

Carry on buying the cheap brand. Only tell him when they are getting divorced!
Cheap and cheerful. Preferably free. :T LBM - more a gradual rude awakening.
