Ems! wrote:Hi guys
Have been reading this thread for a while now... since i started thinking - i really should go on a diet! Anyhow, you guys have motivated me and I started sw yesterday. I'm not going to classes cos there isn't one nr me at a time I can make. I've borrowed the starter pack books, and have bought a syn book from ebay which should be here anyday! Til I get that, I 'm just eating no syns at all apart from muller lights which are only a couple of syns I think. The only problem is I am going away 2morrow for the weekend so am worried I will stray, but I am taking it really seriously and am determined not to be bad! I've spent about a week working out menu plans so I'm ready to go! Weighed myself yesterday and it was scary! Iwant to lose at least 2 stone, and maybe more, depending how I feel when I get to that point. I don't look right if I'm too slim - a few years ago I split up with a boyfriend and lost loads of weight, I was a size 10 on top and 10/12 on the bottom and everyone thought I looked ill!
Anyhow, please can I join the 2 lbs club?!!
Hi Ems - yes of course you can, welcome!
By the way, good news - muller light is FREE:):) on SW with the exception of the ones with cake pieces in such as apple pie, lemon meringue, which are 0.5 or 1 syn.

dellybelly wrote:Does anyone know where I can get reasonably priced kitchen scales that weigh small amounts?
I have the super sized old fashioned scales for baking but they're not really accurate for cereal etc.
Thanks
I've got the Salter add and weigh electronic scales from Argos, and can highly recommend them. Catalogue no: 8403331. They are £24.99. There are other similar Salter scales for £24.99, but they needed an ordinary battery, (not included) whereas the ones I bought have a 10 year lithium battery included. I particularly chose them because they are nice and slimand easily fit in a drawer when you are not using them, if like me, you are short on workspace.
This IBS is a b****r, isn't it? So hard to pin down the cause and deal with it. Although I have IBD as well, which is much more serious, I know that if it flares up I have drugs to deal with it, and if I take my maintenance drugs all the time like a good girl, there is every chance it will stay in remission. With the IBS I am at a loss, and although it is obvious to me it's carb related, I don't know which ones!! Pretty sure fruit upsets me, as well as the more obvious carbs, but where do you start finding out which types? Also, I find sometimes I'm fine with pasta, for example, while another time I can be horrible. Grrrr
Good luck to everyone this week:beer::beer: My glass is half full :beer:0 -
Consultant 31, could you tell me the cost price of the new food directory from meetings, please? That way I will know how much money to take! Also, how often do the food directory updates come during the year? Thanks!Space for rent, apply within - Free trial on Thanks button though0

Hi everyone - you certainly have to check this thread regularly to keep up!
Doing SW opened my eyes to the many options available for vegetarians, and my OH and I now have several meat free days each week. OH and I were discussing it and he was joking that his mum wouldn't believe that he doesn't eat meat everyday and he's quite happy about it - she'd think I was neglecting her little boy! lol
Tonight we had mushroom stroganoff, using a Schwartz mix for vegetables. (I was thinking about putting this on the recipe thread, but decided using a packet mix probably means it doesn't count!)
The additional ingredients list on the packet includes oil, but I leave that out and use Frylight instead. The rest of the additional ingredients are chopped onion, mushrooms and milk, and I also add chopped green and/or red pepper. I've also added Quorn pieces in the past although it's satisfying enough without.
The packet mix is 5.5 syns on SW, and I use milk from the Healthy Extra A allowance, so it's less than 3 syns per serving. Stroganoff is traditionally served with boiled rice, and it's also great served with spaghetti.
We rarely eat minced beef nowadays, as I've discovered that I prefer things like spag bol and chilli con carne made with Quorn mince, and I make use of my slow cooker, preparing the meal in the morning, so when I come home from work all I need to do is cook the pasta or rice.

As for the IBS, most of my trigger foods were by a process of elimination.... I lived in America for a year to go to college and only had turnip once when I was there. I was so ill the next day, and knew it was the only thing that could have caused it. I've never liked eggs but love mayo... that was another day of working out what to stay away from. I must admit, I love lasagne, old fashioned "Derry" stews, chilli and spag bol which all have beef and onions in them... I don't rule them out of my life but I do make allowances for the after effects:p - it's the stealth triggers that get on my nerves... for instance, do you know that some cornish pasties have turnip or swede in them?
I also get affected if I'm nervous or worrying about something. Have you tried using relaxation techniques to manage your IBS? I've found yoga really effective... reflexology has been pretty good for me too.:cool:Goal for 09: Get fit and foxy. target weight 11st. 5/80.Get out of dead end job and work for career I always wanted.0 -

I haven't posted much in the last couple of weeks, but I have been reading the thread most days - you're all such an inspiration. :T :T
I finally plucked up the courage to see the doctor, and I told her I'd been putting off the appointment because I was afraid of what the scales would say. She checked the scales and said, "Well, you weigh less than you did last time." In December I was a little over 11st (I think. I only squinted at the scales) - now I'm 10st10lb.
I'm astonished. I know I put weight on since my last check-up six months ago - my clothes had been getting tighter and tighter (some to the point of being unwearable) - but it seems that in the last sixteen days of following the SW plan I've lost whatever weight I gained in that six months, and then some! My BMI is now at 26, and I guess I must have lost at least 5-6lbs - and perhaps more. :j I could feel it was working, but I have to admit I was very surprised by that result!Sealed Pot Challenge 5 - #1742 :j0 -
Just reading about the problems with IBS that some of you are experiencing, I have it and I believe it was made much worse due to stress in a previous job. I hope you can pinpoint the trigger and avoid it in future or at least make an informed choice when you decide what to eat. I know white crusty bread makes me bloated as does hot pastry so I avoid both most of the time, to be honest I haven't really had any symptoms since losing the stone. I also had real problems with heartburn, I was taking tablets from the doctor which is not like me so it was bad, now I can't really remember feeling uncomfortable after eating for months.0

dellybelly wrote:I don't know about IBD, thank goodness. At least you have ways of managing it. Do you need to get surgery if it flares up again?
There is a possibility that if a flare up bcomes continuous or uncontrollable then surgery would be necessary, but hopefully that will never happen! I've been ok now for 18 months, but it's like a ticking time bomb in that it could flare up tomorrow, or I may never suffer from it again. There's no telling, so I just keep taking the pills and try to forget about it!dellybelly wrote:

I think I'm going to try and work out some sort of elimination process, but I keep putting it off as it's so overwhelming!I don't know where to start, and I do love ALL foods
. As I said before, sometimes I think it's one thing, then the next time I eat it, I'm ok

Yes, you're dead right about it being stress related! I have had reflexology in the past and found it good, so I must investigate that again. I do tend to be a pretty tense person, or as my mother used to say,' highly strung!' I hated that description  . I had a lovely back neck and shoulder massage recently at a spa, and the therapist said I had a lot of negative energy and pent up anger. She was spot on, as I was feeling very angry about a family issue at the time and needed to express my feelings, which I did shortly after, and felt much better :j
Thanks very much for your suggestions and support. You've been a great help :A:beer: My glass is half full :beer:0
