Lost 3lbs this week (well 1.5 when you consider the 1.5 gain i had last week post holiday). Yay! As always, still have a long way to go.

I've been doing the diet thing for about 14 weeks now and can't believe i'm still on it. I've had reasonably good weight losses in the past (with incredible gains afterwards!) but i'm chuffed that i'm still going strong after this time.

Having this board really helps, doesn't it!? :D

Mrs Yatesy, you're right about the lack of weight loss if you eat all 3 Hi-Fi bars at once, but the c&y ones are very more-ish, mmm.

SparkyG, I have never been able to see the logic behind the Atkins, and to be perfectly honest, with everything I know about nutrition and health, I find it a truly frightening diet. I know that you lose weight with it (you will when you completely cut out whole food groups) but it is so unhealthy, it's scary!
The logic behind not being allowed skimmed milk (with virtually no fat or calories) and being allowed as much cream as you like (storing fat around your heart is a killer) is beyond me. I know I shouldn't knock it as I hven't done it myself, but I do hope you're going to be ok. I guess it's not too bad if it's short term, but long term I know it's not going to do your overall health any good at all.

Sorry for going on, I'll push off now and keep my nose out!!
I let my mind wander and it never came back!

I did Atkins after I have my second child and after 3 weeks had lost loads of weight. However I found major drawbacks. It was very expensive and if you fall off the wagon it takes a couple of days to get back into ketosis whereas with WW and SW you can compensate for it much quicker and easier. After the initial 3 weeks I changed to weightwatchers and found it much more suited to my lifestyle.

Having said that though I am a hypocrite as I am doing a meal replacement crash diet for 2 weeks!!

    Hi guys

Have been reading this thread for a while now... since i started thinking - i really should go on a diet! Anyhow, you guys have motivated me and I started sw yesterday. I'm not going to classes cos there isn't one nr me at a time I can make. I've borrowed the starter pack books, and have bought a syn book from ebay which should be here anyday! Til I get that, I 'm just eating no syns at all apart from muller lights which are only a couple of syns I think. The only problem is I am going away 2morrow for the weekend so am worried I will stray, but I am taking it really seriously and am determined not to be bad! I've spent about a week working out menu plans so I'm ready to go! Weighed myself yesterday and it was scary! Iwant to lose at least 2 stone, and maybe more, depending how I feel when I get to that point. I don't look right if I'm too slim - a few years ago I split up with a boyfriend and lost loads of weight, I was a size 10 on top and 10/12 on the bottom and everyone thought I looked ill!

Anyhow, please can I join the 2 lbs club?!!
  • I did Atkins in the 4 weeks leading up to my wedding (and final dress fitting!!!) and lost over a stone BUT put on 1.5 stones back on on my 2 weeks honeymoon....
Must learn not to count chickens before they are hatched!!!!:D

Every day is a new challenge not a new problem!:p

    SW start 08/01/14 4/21lbs (1st target) :j

oh was just out buying new suit in next for an interview tomorrow for a job I really want - i just heard about it today but they want to see me as soon as possible!

anyway walked round next for ages trying on just about every suit in the place - got a lovely one. but my gripe is how is there such a major difference in the sizes - even within the same shop?!

anyhow i'm away to think good thoughts for tomorrow!

Good luck with your interview NadNad! Hope your suit does the job :o
Ems! Re: Mullerlights on SW, they are syn free as long as you don't have the lemon cheesecake / apple pie type ones, which have a syn value, although still very low. You'll be fine this weekend, because you have it in the back of your mind, so you will probably be more careful than you would have been if you had made no plans at all to start SW! Good luck!
Am having a good day so far, although am getting a bit peckish so think it's time to make some drinks and have something to eat - mullerlight here I come! :D
Misguided maybe, but never really bad!! :A

Yes, I do agree, kind of ;) . When a friend of mine did it a few years ago I was horrified, and went on about how dangerous it was, but then in desperation I tried it too with great success.

I'll just give you little bit of background to show you that I do understand the current nutritional advice, but how, for some strange reason the very low carb diet suits me. I have Ulcerative Colitis, which is an inflammatory bowel disease, IBD, not to be confused with IBS! Ulcerative Colitis is not diet related, and my consultant gastroenterologist told me when I was diagnosed that I could eat and drink anything (within reason:D ) and it would make absolutely no difference to the control of the disease. Unfortunately I also have IBS, which as most people know, can be diet related  . For all my adult life I have had very sluggish bowels and frequently suffer from constipation. I drink load of water, (it's a standing joke at work that when I'm on holiday the bottle on the water cooler hardly ever needs changing :p ) and used to eat loads of fibre, eg. All Bran, prunes, dried apricots, figs, baked beans, and even took a fibre supplement prescribed by my doctor. That lot just about kept me regular, but I suffered with constant abdominal discomfort, bloating and wind, all typical symptoms of IBS.

When I first started the Atkins I was very worried about the lack of fibre and suffering from constipation. This is the very bizzare bit: ALL my IBS symptoms disappeared :j For the first time for as long as I could remember, my stomach was comfortable, I had loads of energy and my bowels were regular. Confused  , you bet!!! My gastroenterologist said that strange as it may seem, many peoople on a low fat diet suffer from constipation, as fat is needed to lubricate the bowel, and even with a high fibre diet and lots of water you can still have problems. I do have to say I take 2 dessert spoons full of linseeds every morning. When I came off the Atkins all my symptoms came back. I do not have a wheat allergy (have been tested by the Dr), but I DO think I have an intolerance to carbs.

I do appreciate your concern, Consultant31, and aggree that Atkins should not be followed long term, but it is possible to do it without consuming huge amounts of fat. How does this sound:

Yesterday I ate for breakfast: 2 sticks of celery with cream cheese.

lunch: tin of sardines in brine with green salad and
    cherry tomatoes

dinner: chicken stir fry, with onions, mushrooms and
    peppers.

snack in evening: 2oz of cubed cheddar and 10 olives

Cream is restricted to a couple of tablespoons a day, and in fact I only have 2 cups of coffee with a dribble in each one! The reason you can have cream and not milk is that there are carbs in milk and not in cream. (don't ask me why  )

Today I went out to lunch and had a grilled chicken breast topped with mozzarella, on a bed of char grilled mediterranean vegetables. Yummy!;)
Tonight for dinner I am having a huge baked salmon fillet with sugar snap peas and cauliflower, followed by sugar free jelly. May have a little snack later of sliced turkey and a little cheese sandwiched in a cos lettuce leaf with mayonnaise.

Not too unhealthy??;) So you see, you don't have to fry everything and eat loads of fat. I do agree that cutting out a whole food group is extreme and certainly won't suit everyone, but I feel GREAT:D Weight loss is very slow, and I don't want to give up jacket potatoes, pasta etc for ever, but I'm afraid of getting all the abdominal symptoms back. I think I may try and introduce one thing a week, eg bread one week, then drop the bread and try potatoes for a week, to see if I can pin down what is causing the problem.

BTW, last time I did the Atkins I had a cholesterol test after I had been on the plan for about 10 weeks, and my result was 4.2. I KNOW it flies in the face of current advice, but that's my experience ;)

Sorry to go on and on and on........ and I DO appreciate your concern and opinion :T

SparkyG, you do sound to have got it taped!!
Your dietary intake is very healthy and, unlike some I know who have done the Atkins Diet, you are obviously doing it for a specific reason (other than weight loss) and seem to be doing it in a very sensible manner.
I hope I didn't offend you by questioning your methods - it's just that I have seen first hand, how much damage a bad diet can do.
I'm really pleased that your symptoms are under control and may even suggest cutting way down on the carbs to my members who suffer with IBS, thanks for letting us in on how it works for you. :T

On a different subject, can somebody tell me how to quote a small passage from a previous poster, rather than the whole lot (specially one as long as Sparky's :rotfl:
I let my mind wander and it never came back!
