Those of you who buy charts and materials seperately......can you tell me of any good (and cheap :o ) sites to buy from?

Personally, I would recommend ebay - you can bulk buy whichever colours you want for much less per skein than you would pay in ghte shops. I get my threads brought from America, they are so cheap over there, but if I need some in a hurry, then ebay's the place for me.:D

I looked at the link MRSMC posted and saw that the best projects were charts and not kits so I got nervous and didn't buy anything.

I say nervous because I have only ever bought ready to go kits and never bought materials seperately so I have no idea at all of cost.

Having thought about it its probably better value to buy a chart then the materials seperately because you will then have plenty of thread left over once the project is finished for another one but never having done this I'm nervous incase it works out more expensive (though I don't think it would be)

It doesn't work out more expensive - as you say you will have lots of threads left over. Plus, if you decide to do projects from magazines/online charts, you need your own stuff to do them.

Also can you recommend which brands of thread to use? For example are Anchor threads any better/worse/different colours to DMC?

I personally use DMC, mainly because I like them, they are easiest to get hold of and most charts seem to have DMC colours in them - saves having to convert them to another brand)

I have found a nice site that tells me about the differences in using different count aida so I understand that bit.

Have any of you done 'pre-stamped' kits? Are they nice to do? I have seen them but dismissed them.....I don't know why though

I have tried them....and I honestly hate them. I like having a chart and sticking to it. Having to make up extra stitches to cover a bit on printed material annoys the heck out of me.

Sorry for all the questions but I'm nervous about buying a chart then finding its just as expensive as buying the ready to go kit.

    Thanks ladies :D

On a final note - if you are going to start buying your own threads, then I would highly recommend having a storage system in place when you do. I used to have A4 folders with plastic thread holders inside, but have recently moved on to plastic boxes with threads would round bobbins (much easier to find)

No point buying loads of threads, then losing track of which colour is which - it would defeat the purpose of buying them lol.

    folderaq8.th.jpg
and this is how I have my threads when Im working -each in a bank bag with the number written on it -no annoying thread sortes full of tangles for me :rotfl:plus they all stand up in a tub/box so they are easy to find -plus you can stick the lid on to keep everything safe if you have pets, littlies etc...

Last time I worked on it (start of the month!)

Apologies for the big pictures, but if I post smaller ones, there's no chance you'll see any difference! :rotfl:

I have done a few hours on it today. Made much better progress than I did yesterday. Watched (well, half watched) Legally Blonde and Legally Blonde 2 while I stitched and the afternoon flew by.

How is everyone else getting along?

Thanks you all so much for your advice, I appreciate it!

I think I'll start with a small stash at first, only buying enough for any one particular chart at a time.
Louise, I like the look of those thread storage boxes, might have to get one ready for when I need it :D
Also think I'll get a small piece of evenweave to try before buying loads and wishing I hadn't :rotfl:

    Thanks again everyone!

I am currently working on 'Galatea' - she is coming along nicely :D

I don't have any plans for christmas items at the moment, although I would like to make a nice girly picture for my neice - they have all just moved house and she has her own bedroom now lol, so would be nice to do something for her. Mind you, this is the 8 year old girl who wants a worm farm for her birthday next month....so any princessy-type things are a no-go! :rotfl:

Hey Maria, good luck with the "Princess", I've just finished it, was glad to see the end of the backstitch, but was pleased with it in the end!
Shelly, I also store my threads like Louise but I when Im sewing I put the threads Im using into individual bank bags as advised by Mrs M. I like to be organised!

    Have a great day everyone!

I find it really interesting all the different methods people use.

When I'm sewing, I punch holes in a piece of card to make a thread holder, cut a length of each thread number and attach it to each hole, next to it's number.
