    I've just checked, you are correct there is another round connector.

    In that case, you have two options:
    • Assuming you can get the keyboard to work consistently, obtain a PS/2 adapter for your USB mouse (or a PS/2 mouse) and disable the USB ports.
    • Replace everything.

    That has nothing to do with the contents of your hard disk and everything to do with the interface between the keyboard and your computer. A new computer (or motherboard) with a USB keyboard and USB mouse would sort that out pretty sharpish.

    If you got a new motherboard, you would of course have to fit it yourself.

    I think this is going way way above my head now, I know that you and spanky are trying hard to help me with this, but I was hoping that there would be a fairly simple solutiion to this problem, and someone would be able to say 'click this, click that, save etc.

    There is no way I'd know how to fit a new motherboard or anything else... I had enough grief trying to remove the battery!
