I just read some of the comments after the article and they made me really cross! It's such a shame when an opinion gets distorted and hashed about by the media, causing all kinds of unnecessary furore and the core message gets lost! You can take or leave such an opinion but pretty irresponsible of the Mail to totally distort what the guy said so people can't make an informed judgement for themselves (unless they happen to search out other commentary for a more balanced view). ironically, both this man and the doctor who was responding were championing women having an informed view!
It just seemed to me to be the kind of scare story I read before having my babies and I wanted to reassure - perhaps unnecessarily.

I think if you buy good quality eggs then a little bit of runniness is unlikely to be a problem (same for meat and fish - I've had prawns and medium steaks since being PG, which we've cooked ourselves but bought the best quality) Nanc's mostly cooked is probably a good principle!MFW Challenge member no. 96 - on hold!

It's just a bit sad that things that aren't scare stories are turned into ones by the media, as if we aren't all encouraged to be scared enough these days! A lot of people ask me if I'm scared yet, which is quite revealing of how people view childbirth... a lot more than ask me if I'm excited. In fact more people say negative than positive things generally! When I steadfastly refuse to be drawn into how awful things are or will be, their last resort is 'well, you just wait and see!' Really helpful!
I think we're doing pain relief at NCT tonight tooMFW Challenge member no. 96 - on hold!

ml - true, true...advice is only that. I've had brie & blue cheeses, rare steaks & McFlurries and I'm still alive!top 2013 wins: iPad, £50 dental care, £50 sportswear, £50 Nectar GC, £300 B&Q GC; jewellery, Bumbo, 12xPringles, 2xDiesel EDT, £25 Morrisons, £50 Loch Fyne

I agree, I don’t actually like runny eggs so that’s not a problem for me, but so long s you use good quality, fresh eggs they will more than likely be fine. So long as you get eggs with the red lion mark that means they are vaccinated against salmonella so the chances of getting it must be pretty slim. Same goes for meat. I can only really eat steak rare so the thought of cooking it through puts me right off! if I have a steak during this pregnancy I will make sure it’s top quality fresh meat and will still have it pink.0 -
Aless - yup, the human body is pretty resilient! I have great faith in things generally being ok. I've had brie too (yum!) no blue cheese but that's only cos I don't like it (am a strong cheddar girl!). What's the problem with McFlurries?! Again not a fan but a curious outsider
In fact I don't think I've said no to anything on the grounds of being pregnant except the 2nd glass of wine lol!MFW Challenge member no. 96 - on hold!

I've had pretty much everything i wanted, the listeria risk in eggs is tiny, in fact when i was reading the research on it, they tested eggs and found that the contents of the eggs never had listeria but they did find traces on the shells as it was picked up from the infected hen. So cook carefully and wash your hands and enjoy your runny eggs (that's my opinion anyway)
There's a MUCH higher risk of listeria from those salad bars and deli counters in the supermarket!! but then i've had the odd bowl of self scoop olives from those too...
I always have my steak medium but then i always make sure it's good meat, i can't bear well done steak, what's the point??
And i also will happily have McFlurries, the ice cream mix is pastuerised anyway, but at the end of the day its a very personal decision!
Mmmm McFlurry, i had one of those cornetto ones the other day....was really good, might have to go get one today!!0
