Sugar - can't comment on those specific quotes as he didn't say anything like that on the radio this morning - he focused very much on the medical side of things (as I suspect the original journal article did).

I've requested the original article, but in any case telling journalists that women ought to suffer in labour because it's good for the baby is misogynistic codswallop and he should be ashamed of himself.

Edit to add the Guardian article link:

Jillie - s/he could withdraw it. Check your email for an item withdrawal notice.

I hate it when that happens. Aless - you have to cancel all bids and then withdraw the item. It's against ebay rules but some people do it. Because they are horrid.

jillie - I don't think you can withdraw an auction if there's been bids made.

I do agree that there are too many women who go through pregnancy thinking they can just get drugged up and won't feel a thing in labour (remember that other site I linked too last week?), but we do have medication to help ease pain so I don't see the point in making women suffer when they don't have too. A little bit of pain is good you get that sence of achievement and you don't do as much harm to your body (think of SPD and epidurals etc).

The way it was worded in that article was so bad that the message that came across is that we should all be in agony to have our babies or we will be terrible mothers. But then that's what newspapers do so we need to be able to see beyond that.

Me I had an epidural with DS1 and still felt pain, it was great! And I'll probably do the same if I have a VBAC this time.

Speaking of that other website, a few ladies lost their babies after movements slowed down, so remember if, your not bothering the hospital if baby is quiet and you are worried. Cos we don't want any sad news here.
  • Aless - yes indeed, see what you mean... he must have realised there was a bit of a backlash against his anthropological views as he definitely steered clear this morning! Good to hear the Beeb have done something better with the material - damage, I suspect, has already been done, unfortunately.

  • Sugar - good that you've requested the article because that's the only way of getting at what was actually said. Like I said - he did not say anything about the virtues of suffering this morning so I am only judging by what I heard. I wouldn't subscribe for a second to such a view - equally I wouldn't subscribe to a view that saw labour as intrinsically a medical problem that should be routinely treated with drugs given no other complications. BOTH views are actually pretty demeaning to women!! Surely the message should be one of choice, but choice that is truly informed. Fear is probably the most dangerous thing, at least in the case of an otherwise normal labour.

I think everyone's view - unsurprisingly, given our collective condition - is that labour is about making choices that work best for us and the tiny people we're making.

Pain relief is an option, because birth is a painful process and if it goes on too long we may need it. Some people do and some don't, and neither person should be judged because of their choice.
