But jvic's baby (as was my first) was a footling breach, not a frank breach. This means that baby was presenting with feet coming down the birth canal, not bum, and to deliver a footling breach vaginally has a 15-20% of compression of the umbilical cord and fatality to the baby (as opposed to 0.5% chance for other kinds of vaginal delivery). So, personally I think she and I made the right decision, and anyone who would contemplate a home birth with a footling breach is a far far braver (?) person than me!

I was only adding some info, not commenting on Jvic's birth :) I did mean to say it can depend on the presentation, BUT I know of women who have birthed footling breeches vaginally and it was perfectly OK. Obviously you do have to weigh up risks though.

Anyway, I was only meaning to add info on breeches in general, and thought I was clear that I was NOT commenting on Jvic's decision and birth.

wow skintcick thanks for all the help and links. you have given me tons of options. I don't really need a cot as still got ds's cotbed. We are having a cabin bed delivered this week for him bit early i know but it was in the sales. I don't know what to do really, Ds didn't stay in the moses basket for very long at all i think it was about 3-4 weeks he moved round so much my health vistor told me to put him in his own bed in his own room and the minute he was in his own bed he went from 8pm to 8 am and still loves his sleep now. So i am not sure therey are worth there money.

We are going to co-sleep and have baby in with us for probably at least a year, and then it will be the cot, so it's worth it for us.

I think the current advice is to have baby in your room (not necessary co-sleeping) for at least six months anyway.

Hi everyone! I found out last week I am pregnant after 15 months of trying! I'm currently 5 weeks although we did think I may be 12 weeks already after speaking to the dr last week 9very irregular cycles and I haven't had a period since March) however following a scan yesterday it shows I'm just 5 weeks!!

Had to have the scan as had some bleeding whoich came, twice, but went away again. Nobosy has yet explained what thi smight have been though. Does anyone else have any experience of this? I have to go for another scan in 2 weeks so they can check the heartbeat etc as at 5 weeks they can't be sure if they've actually heard it yet!

    Thanks!
    Sarah
  • word of advice to you ladies - make sure you apply for your health in pregnancy grant as soon as you can. My midwifes didn't have any forms for ages, then I elected for a homebirth so wasn't visiting the doctors surgery and the community midwifes had run out. I finally got one filled out the day after my due date and my claim is being refused even though Reece didn't arrive until 8 days later.

 Me livid - most definately!!

If I want to appeal I have to now put it in writing, so I'll have to get a letter together for them to take millions of weeks to decide they aren't giving it to me! Maybe I should have wasted an appointment slot at the surgery just to get the midwife to sign a form - even though the appointments are a nightmare to get hold off and it would have stopped someone else making good use of the time with the midwife!

Congratualtions and welcome Sarah Joanne! Bleeding can be implantation, or just some random spotting, and is often nothing to worry about.
EDIT - you won;t hear the heartbeat at this stage but you will be able to see it - you cannot hear it until about 16 weeks. THe presence of a HB means your risk of mc falls to about 5 per cent, and it falls again at 12 weeks to 2 per cent.
Bleeding without pain is usually nothing serious, but if you get any cramping call your MW or hospital immediately.

Claire - that sucks! Get your appeal letter in pronto.

oh no, Claire! I hope you get it sorted. I'm sure the appeal will be upheld once they see Reece's actual birth date was after your claim was filed.

We often clash on this issue skintchick, but if you look back at your original post it was quite clearly suggesting that a vaginal delivery was an option for a footling breach and that the only reason not to go for one was a lack of experience on the part of NHS midwives. That just isn't the case - the reason not to attempt it is a very considerably higher risk to the baby, and my own opinion is that risk is unacceptably high.

I am aware that you are very pro home birth and very anti c section, and that you consider c sections and inductions in most cases to be part of a medical conspiracy, but I am concerned when you continually post these statements as fact on this thread. You have said for example that NHS midwives don't deliver breach babies by c section. I wonder where you have got this information from, other than one of the more radical home birth websites? My own NHS hospital for example does deliver breach babies, and wouldn't automatically go straight for a c-section. My cousin who lives in a different area delivered 2 breach babies in hospital knowing in advance they were breach, and my BF had her baby successfully turned in pregnancy but had this not worked would have been offered the option of a vaginal birth for a frank breach in a third NHS area.

I really wasn't, and have clarified as I thought I'd mentioned different types of breech but preggy brain struck again.

Please don;t look for arguments where there are none.

From everything I've have read and BEEN TOLD BY MY MW, the NHS says if it's breech then it's C-section, but I'm glad that that isn;t the case in every area. It clearly is in many areas though, and people do deserve to know that it;s not necessarily the way forward and that there are other options.

I certainly do not believe in 'medical conspiracies', I just think a lot of old skills have been lost in many areas.

I believe in informed choice, and I'm sorry if you think that my adding info on here is wrong, but I think we should be able to post on all sides of the coin as this is a discussion forum.

I think we SHOULD have discussions about controversial/contentious topics - there's nothing wrong with some healthy debate on relevant topics. Skinty's view on breeches/c-sections is different than Nicki's, but that doesn't mean either one is wrong. Hearing lots of people's opinions actually helps the rest of us make better informed and well-rounded opinions. If I know there's a debate about a particular issue, I'll be more motivated to go and research it for myself so I can make a good decision about my own baby/birth.

No one on this thread should take anything as absolute fact and everything should be checked with MW and via reliable sources like books, etc. I think we're all smart enough to realise that and I would never discourage someone from posting their opinion on a particular issue, no matter how popular it is. Skinty did say at the beginning that she never intended her statement to pass judgment on Jvic's birth, but more that Jvic's BS prompted her to post some stuff about breech births.

I think the important thing is that everyone has as much information as possible so they get as close to the birthing experience they want as possible.

That includes my planned birth, which will involve all the drugs I can finagle out of the midwives, and skinty's hoped-for pain-relief-free birth, or MM's planned C-section and even the people whose emergency births don't go as planned but who have the knowledge to make informed decisions on the spot.

I've just realised I have a £2 ebay voucher and a 10% and a 5% voucher. I'm going to use the first two now on my OH's two big Christmas presents (a super fabulous knife sharpener and a laser cosmos for the bedroom), then use my IWOOT £20 on his medium present, and then the shopping is done!

I hope he doesn't sneak on and read here. That would mean nothing would ever surprise him again ;)
