No one ever mentions converting your Tesco points as Air Miles. Tesco's will do this for you. You get 80 miles for 250 points. If you use your Tesco Visa in conjunction they double your points. We pay as many bills as possibble with Tesco Visa and have been to the USA and Thailand with the proceeds. This represents real value.

didn't look that way to me....

£2.50 in club card vouchers = 60 air miles
£2.50 in club card vouchers = £10 on deals

    therefore £10 = 60 air miles

The Tesco Visa/Mastercard gives you double points for both normal deals and airmiles, so there is no relevance of this.

According to Airmiles, London - Bangkok (for example) on 6oct, returning 15 Oct is 5,510 airmiles + £98 'tax' on Qatar Airlines.

That same flight would be £419 bought from a travel agent on that same airline, inclusive of fees.

    So the 5,510 airmiles are worth £419 - £98 = £321.

That many airmiles would cost 91.8 * 60 airmiles, equivalent to £230 worth of club card vouchers, which would get you £920 worth of deals.

£920 is a lot better than £321 (and let's not forget that Airmiles doesn't do all airlines - there is actually a cheaper £388 fare available on Etihad).

Please correct me if I have missed a trick on how to get better value out of the miles, but whenever I have looked it appears that the deals are MUCH better than the miles.

    I looked here http://www.moneysavingexpert.com/cgi-bin/viewnews.cgi?newsid1095801196,55201,

and Martin reckons the airmiles are worth 9.21p, which is moire than my calculations on the basis of London-Bangkok (which values them about 5.8p). Assuming they are, that makes the 60 airmiles worth £5.53, compared with £10 of deals. £10 of deals is definitely worth more than £5.53, so it seems clear that converting your tesco points to airmiles is a bad idea.
  • Martin or any MSE helpers can you clarify the above Airmiles vs Vouchers which is better???

To drift off on a slightly different angle, what do you do when your point are coming to the end of their time limit?
Not being a big spender at Tesco's, it takes a long time to get any accummulation of points, typically £5.50 per quarter. Then I find that I have run out of time on the first vouchers.
Is there a way round this?

Just been to tesco's bought my Ipod shuffle. got my points. I can now pay for parking at the airport for a week and listen to my ipod on the plane instead of listening to the kids. Thanks a lot.
    HOW MUCH ?
  • Just been to Tesco (for the second time today) and now in a bad mood. Guess what, sold out of ipods. Even more annoyed because just wasted 1/4 hr. on the phone to our other Tesco (only Superstore) and they won't answer their phone. First store said they hoped to have some more tomorrow but can't promise. Looks like another bike ride to Tesco in the morning.

I would convert them to a days out voucher just before the clubcard vouchers expire. These then have their own expiry date I think six months from when you order them. You can order online using the code off the voucher.

The days out vouchers can be used on most of the days out deals (except for most of the theme parks - look for the code S3010) - get £50 worth or whatever, and you can use them on a variety of different places - no need to plan in advance, just keep a stack of vouchers, and present them in lieu of money for admission when you go to the place.
  • I got the email this morning and popped down to my local Denton Tesco Homeplus store in Gtr Manchester and got 3.

    They had plenty.

Thanks for that. £120 towards MFI vouchers for our fast approaching house move.
