My local Sainsbury's now has £50 fines for people who park in the P&C spaces which, as if the spaces were not liberty enough, is a real cheek. I have never parked in a P&C space although I vehemently disagree with them.

I am tempted to start and stick two fingers up to Town and Country who will be issuing the "fines".

So if someone 'vehemently disagreed' that there was any wrong in coming round to your house and spraying graffitti all over the walls you wouldn't expect them to be fined? Suppose someone 'vehemently disagreed' that they shouldn't drive their car through a busy city centre after drinking ten pints, or someone 'vehemently disagreed' that they should be prohibited from making a living out of selling heroin to ten year olds?

The fact is that we live in a so-called civilised society. Rules are put in place to improve the overall way of life and although we don't always agree with all those rules (I certainly don't!) it doesn't give us the right to pick and choose which rules we obey. Perhaps if more people did stick to the rules we might end up with a genuinely civilised society?

p.s. As a parent with two kids I have give you credit for not parking in P&C spaces. Thanks very much for that. It's a shame a few more people couldn't follow your example.
The fridge is empty, the walls are damp, there's no hot water

I think Peter Kay view on this subject is most definately appropriate. " I go to Tesco's with my Mum. Im 28 and my mum 57. This means we are able to use the Mother and Child facilities as we are Mother and her child !!! Boom boom.
If you see a penny, pick it up, all day long you'll have good luck !!!!!! :D

why not line a CTV camera on these parking spaces, then post a pic of the vehicle and driver on a screen inside store. Also put a snap on the notice board. Persistent offenders would soon get fed up of the glances and mutterings from other shoppers instore ! though some of these morons would probably brazen it out.

Drunken driving, drug dealing and spraying graffiti are criminal acts and are thus punishable by fines or imprisonment. Parking in the wrong part of a PRIVATE car-park is not a criminal act and nobody can "fine" you for it. That's the difference.

All I'm trying to suggest is that it would be better for society as a whole if people didn't believe they had the right to pick and choose which rules are relevent to them, regardless of whether these are criminal, civil or moral transgressions.

Perhaps you would be quite happy for me to come and leave my car parked in your drive. As you clearly believe that people can do whatever they like in a 'private car park' then you couldn't really have any complaints?

Then I could prosecute that person for trespass in the civil court, but I would not be able to charge that person an arbitrary "fine" for parking in my driveway.

Is it not the case that supermarkets offer parking that is free, unless you break certain terms and conditions, then the charge for the parking space is £60.

Do they register unpaid charges with credit reference agencies?

I really think the attitude that "They can't touch you for it" means it's OK to do something, stinks.

The only time it will effect your credit rating is in the unlikely event you are taken to court by the car-park company, you lose and you don't pay the money due into court. It's the same as if you were owed some money by a friend, they did not pay you and you then tried to get them "blacklisted" by a credit -reference agency. You cannot do that.

As for the "they can't touch me for it". So what? Unless you are breaking the law you have nothing to worry about. Otherwise any Tom. !!!!!! or Harry would start bringing out their own "laws" and start "fining" people. I could say "I think I will fine anyone who walks on my front lawn £50" The law does not work like that.

Exactly my point! As you say I would be in the wrong to park in a 'private car park' at your house. But equally I would be in the wrong to park in a space on a 'private car park' at a supermarket if I knew that I was prohibited from doing so and there were signs on display to explain this. It doesn't matter if it's a civil offence or criminal offence just as it doesn't matter if it's dealt with in a Crown Court, Magistrates Court, County Court or even a Tennis Court. Whether or not you can 'fine' someone for doing whatever it is they've done is irrelevant.

If it's wrong to do something then DON'T DO IT!!!!

You are missing the point. What we are arguing against is the imposition of these arbitrary fines. The only money that a private parking company can claim back from somebody overstaying the time, or parking in the wrong slot is any loss that has been suffered by the company. If it's £1 an hour and you stay another hour that's just £1. If you park in the wrong sort of slot there has been no loss - especially if the car-park is not full at the time. It is illegal to try and extract penalties which have no bearing on the actual loss that has been suffered. The parking companies are not above the law and they can't make their own laws. Only Parliament can do that.
