    Congratulations to Dinah SOTW with a 2lb loss. (Granny's doesn't count - it's just a holiday re-adjustment)

Too modest Granny! That loss is your reward for being brave enough to face the scales straight after your holiday!!! Well done to you and Dinah, and everyone else who's happy with their result this week... :D

Missing your chat FFM, is everything OK? Hope so :)

Beanie welcome back and congrats to your son!

BB, hope you're feeling better tomorrow. Take care.

Sorry I'm too late for the chart this week - I've been offline for the past few days shed building and finally finished it very late last night in the rain and dark.

    Congrats Dinah

    Thanks for the article, naijapower.

I find a lot of help in this site https://www.weightlossresources.co.uk

I've also discovered Tom Venuto http://www.burnthefat.com/

    And Jon Benson http://www.fitover40.com/about

Tom Venuto is basically a bodybuilder, but he talks a lot of sense, and quotes some well-established research. Building up muscle is necessary because muscle actually burns up fat, and to build up muscle, resistance exercise is advised. I have a set of dumbells and some stretch tubing and I do exercises at home. Tom also talks about starting the day early, having a small protein snack before breakfast and doing some exercise early. I've been doing that the last 3 weeks or so and it certainly seems to be working - or something is working! He advises having lean protein with complex carbs at each meal. Carbs are not all the same. Some are refined carbs - white bread, pasta, white rice - but others, fibrous vegetables, wholemeal bread and wholegrain cereals, shouldn't be put in the same category as the refined carbs.

I've discovered that I'm sensitive to white flour and white sugar so I've managed to cut them out almost completely, including anything made from them. That includes white bread, cakes, pastries, biscuits. Well, we didn't eat them much at this house anyway because DH is an insulin-using diabetic so we never had puddings etc, always fresh fruit.

Tom Venuto advises small meals, either 3 meals and 2 snacks or 5 small meals spread out throughout the day, starting early. It's necessary to start early to kick-start the metabolism into action following the overnight fast. He also advises not eating 2-3 hours before bedtime, because the metabolism naturally slows down in preparation for sleep, when we don't need much exercise.

Oh, and drinking as well. Drink, drink, drink! Especially if you're doing exercise, to replace that lost in sweat, but also to help repair muscle damage.

Well done Dinah and Granny. Great stuff!

I totally forgot to weigh in, but this week is all out of sync for me, so that figures.

Liverpool was lovely, as ever. Vix it is nothing like you'd imagine it to be. Having watched Brookside for many years, that was what I thought it would be like. I've been visiting there now for quite a few years, and I have always been impressed by the history and great architecture there. Last year, having been the Cultural Capital of Europe they had a massive injection of cash (billions), and lots of previously derelict buildings and areas have been redeveloped. There is a new museum, new ferry terminal (where cruise liners now dock), new canalside area by the docks with lovely open-plan walkways, and a whole newly developed city centre with a mixture of stunning new buildings, alongside beautifully restored ones. We went to the new Odeon cinema there, which is built in amongst the new stores, incl. a John Lewis. Lots of designer shops, as well as the normal high street ones. They have a China Town, just like in London or NYC. If you ever go there, I can recommend most of the restaurants down Lark Lane, which is an old residential area, which has now become a vibrant eating/social district, with multi-ethnic cuisine. The city park is huge, clean, and lovely for walks and picnics, and the guy who designed NYC's Central Park based his design on the park he saw in Liverpool. The Anglican Cathedral is a stunning bit of architectural design, done by the same guy who designed the red telephone box (there's one inside the cathedral). So, I cannot recommend a trip highly enough, and you are a really short journey away from some stunning sandy beaches there too - literally 10-15 mins from the city centre. There's the Anthony Gormley exhibit 'Another Place' on the beach at Formby, which you may have seen on TV programmes. One of my favourite places, and just up the road from there at Crosby, there is a wonderful beach with mahoosive sand dunes, AND a red squirrel reserve! Imagine your excitement levels then Granny! I should really work for the L'pool tourist board y'know...

So, while I was away my eating was measured, although I did allow myself a little indulgence too. I had some strawberries and cream, but it was the cream left over from the w/end, and I did have Doritos during the movie. We went to see Ice Age 3D, and I've never seen a 3D film before, but it was amazing, and so funny. I love the kids animated films these days, because they are so cleverly done, and the humour hits the spot with adults too. Such fun. I cooked on our 2nd night there, and did h/m lasagne, which my friend seemed intrigued you were actually able to cook yourself!:o She had me run through the ingredients and method with her, but I don't think she'll do it herself. Her cooker looks unused, and she just about manages to use the grill for bacon and fish fingers, but the rest of the time it's ready meals. Anyway, good news is that she's been to her GP re. her weight, and has been referred to the hospital where a team of 10 are going to put together a nutrition/exercise/counselling programme for her, and offer her assistance for life, which is fabulous, and at last I think she's doing it the right way, and not crash dieting. They warned her that avoiding sugar and carbs had sent her completely the other way and made her eat too much fat, and the fat was the thing that was going to kill her prematurely.

The journey back was another nightmare marathon trip. What should have taken less than 3 hours, took us 6! The A1(M) was closed, and the M1 was congested, and then we needed a comfort break, and then the kids were hungry... We finally got back home at about 9pm, having left early afternoon!

Well done with the losses this week gang. Some good ones in there. Vix, let us know how that DVD goes.

Today my eldest gets his AS level results, so we've got our fingers crossed that he did OK, otherwise he can't stay in his current school to complete the next year, and would have to start all over again.
One day the clocks will stop, and time won't mean a thing

Be nice to your children, they'll choose your care home
  • i like the squirrel sanctuary at formy sary - dead good. glad you had a nice trip!

Thanks for that post Margaretclare :) That's more or less the plan that I follow (even though I'd never heard of Tom V!) As a maintainer, I've had great success since about March this year with eating 6 small meals a day instead of 3 larger meals & small snacks. Wish I'd tried it sooner!

I eat a lot of carbs, even high-GI carbs can have their place if you're an active person - they replenish depleted fuel stores faster.

Sary you're having a nightmare with the roads on your trips lately! Good luck to your friend with her new programme, let us know how she gets on.

My home gym equipment has just been collected, it's the end of an era :rotfl:

You may have improved my perception somewhat scary :p I just get intimidated by large cities, i like my little city where it takes 5 mins to cross it by car! Plus, my Cathedral is the best one in the World, nothing comes close to Canterbury Cathedral, apart from ones abroad but not really, its more special than them, and i graduated in it so acautlly it wins.
I might go and order the liverpoolian tourist brochure and see for myself.

All this talk of people getting their exam results is doing my head in!! For one, its making me want to go back into eduction (why i dont know) and two its making me scared that i still dont have a bracket to be in :( Three i feel bloody excellent because an old school friend added me on facebook and his mother appealed and appealed for him to get into grammar, he went and didnt even go to uni so i feel good that i achieved more than a grammar student. I could go on.

Good luck to your son scary!
