Has anyone ever cancelled and then subscribed again straight away to get the new customer deals?

So you actaully cancelled and then rang back to see if they had any offers to tempt you back?

  • Hi,

i can't really help you with your question but thought i'd post a quick message as i have an associated question.

I currently receive freesat, that is effectively freeview (minus a couple of channels and plus a few others) but is received through a satellite disk. We used to be a Sky subscriber but have since quit and now just receive the free channels through this set up.

Our video recorder (old one) broke recently and though it was only working sporadically it did the job usually. I have thus been looking into ways of replacing it recently.

Initially i though it would be best to get a freeview box but then i found out about the way it works and the differences between it and freesat (please humour me but i though i had better be thorough to avoid any confusion, or should that be any unnecessary confusion!).

Having realised that a freeview box would not work, i thought about dvd recorders but have made little progress working them out.

Another thought was getting a sky plus box either from sky or secondhand. As i understand it this would allow me to still get the same freesat channels whilst using the functions of the sky plus box....ie that it can 'save' programmes to the hard disc and allows you to pause, f.forward and rewind live tv.

Since looking into it i have become alerted to the fact that it may not work with a freesat set-up, is this true? ie do you need a full Sky subscription in order to use a sky plus box with your tv?

Just to clarify, all i want is the same channels...freesat ones...but with the potential to record programmes. This could be onto disc (like the dvd recorder) or onto a hard drive (like the sky plus box).

I am just a little confused by it all really and really don't want to buy a sky plus box only to find it doesn't work.

Any help would be gratefully appreciated,

    kindest regards,

    Richie
  • You will LOVE sky plus - I was convinced it was just a gimick (sp?) but I wouldn't be without it now, it is great!

    I've had SKY+ now for about 6 years..Paid £199 for my box !!!

I can honestly say its been one of the best bits of tech that i've ever bought....dont think i could ever go back to tapes....

series link....( how to fill your hard drive very easy ) !!!

Ripped out the hard drive in the box and replaced it with another MUCH MUCH larger one....

Having read the previous posts and as a Sky Subscriber for nearly 20 years, I telephoned regarding changing to a Sky+ Box:money:. I used a Freephone number that I had found of 0800 0468857 instead of the usual 0870 one. I was quoted £149 for the box and £60 installation fee.

I mentioned the length of time I had been with them, new customers getting all the offers and guess what? They would not budge.

I gave them a sob story of the cost and being unable to use the existing box due to difficulty programming etc and guess what? They would not budge.

I told them that Virgin Cable was available in my area and had good offers for their V+ Box and I would contact them to see what they would offer and guess what? They would not budge.

I then gave them a rant, and when I rant, I really do rant and guess what? They would not budge.

Can someone please give me the secret of getting Sky to upgrade for a reasonable price, as I have never ever achieved anything from them.

The number one rule is that you don't phone to upgrade or anything else. You are calling to cancel. When you are put through to retentions you will be asked why you wish to cancel. You then tell them (without ranting) that you want the Sky+ box, but you can't get a decent offer despite being with Sky since Adam was a lad.

You should get some kind of offer. At this point you can mention that Virgin have quoted much less (say £20 per month) and you are thinking of going there. You may get an improved offer. Maybe research Virgin's charges before you call.

    Good luck :)

    Here is how you do it;
    1. 1.Ring and go through to cancellations option
    2. Be polite and YOU MUST SAY THE MAGIC WORDS," hello, i would like to cancel please"
    3. They will say why is that?
    4. You. say your reason ( vigin cheaper(do some homework into actual prices or services that are cheaper that you would like on sky etc), poor service, fed up of new customers getting better deals etc or whatever other reason you may have.
    5. If they say "ok, bye!" say that is terrible that they dont even try to make you stay and say just leave it now, instead i am going to write to your manager and hang up or tell them the door bell has rung and will have to sort this later or anything. Do not cancel yet!! Instead ring back half an hour later or a different day of the week.
    6. They usually though will then say something like "lets see if we can help you" or something like that. There will be a pause where they are seeing what offers they actually have to give(all operators have different offers and are limited to what they can give).
    7. If they dont offer(wait for offer first) you what you really want ask what the best they can do on that particular offer and maybe compare it to virgin catch up service or Tesco Hd offer.
    8. If you are happy say yes and well done.:D
    9. If you are not happy say i want to think this over or discuss it with my other half and thank them and ring back 20 mins-days later(they will say offer only for limited time and say ok i appreciate that).A note may be added to your account but dont fret.
    10. Ring back cancellations dept and speak to new operator and do it all over again and hopefully you will get a better deal. ALWAYS SAY YOU ARE RINGING TO CANCEL!
    11. Martin has a guide on this and apparently it may also depend when you ring. I rung on a wednesday if that helps and got the best sky+ offer out(totally free upgrade).
    12. Good luck;)
