I've only ever found the Apple store to be a complete waste of time and money. PC World with a shiny white plastic cover imo.

I prefer the manufacturers to come to me, rather than for me to have to make the effort to go to them to rectifiy their mistake. That's just me though..

No one has mentioned that when you buy a Mac it holds it's value better than a PC will - the OP should take this depreciation difference into account when thinking about the lifetime cost of both products.
I also fail to see how 'Start, Programs, Internet Explorer' is quicker than just clicking on Safari from the dock, as just one example.

ONE THING I LIKE ABOUT MY PC IS IT HAS A SCREEN AND SHOWS ME STUFF AND I CAN TYPE AND IT APPEARS THERE!!!!!!1......dear god.

And to the person who brought in the whole "I've hardly had any viruses on my Mac":

I haven't had any viruses...AT ALL on my windows machine since pre 2000. One hundred times out of one hunderd a machine will be infected because the user is a noob, system isn't maintained properly and the way the computer market dictates that Microsoft is winner - viruses get written for MS orientated OS.

OP still hasn't responded...I'm guessing troll or wasn't interested in any laptop discussion at all.

    I'm done!

...or the OP might have found yet another mac vs windows debate to have somewhat derailed their question and gone elsewhere?

Windows on a mobile phone <shudders>, easily the worst interface and poorest OS available today. It's well behind the times, MS have left it languish since older PDA days.

In my opinion, if someone is a professional and uses the bog standard WM5/6 UI, they are an idiot (sorry if offended). I mean, look how nice WM can be adapted to be (see below). WM is meant for developers, not nooby, go with the flow (Apple) users. Sorry if anyone is offended, but that how it appears to me to be.

Thanks for that anewhope and Percy1983, but if you read post #20 - it related directly to the start menu, NOT the desktop OR quicklaunch. My point was the dock versus the start button. Oh, and shortcuts are called aliases on Macs :-p

OK, I am thinking about buying a 13 inch MacBook Pro. I work at a university so can get an educational discount. A couple of qs -

    - Given that I am mainly going to be using it for office related tasks and (not graphics heavy) is it worth be splashing out the extra for the 2.53 Ghz version with 4 GB memory rather than two? (Cheaper model is £772.80, vs. £972)

    - Will hardware that I already own - e.g. Microsoft Natural Ergonomic Keyboard 4000, Microsoft optical mouse work with the Mac?

    - Is the support/warranty package worth the money?

    - Should I just buy another Dell for about 500 quid?

    Thanks :)

I probably wouldn't bother with the more expensive model. I would bump the cheaper model's HDD up to 250 GB for an extra £40, and then I would buy any extra RAM I required from Crucial; buying RAM from Apple is very expensive.

    If they're USB, then yes.

It's very cheap with the education discount, so I'd say it was worth it.

I wouldn't. Being able to install OS X without any hacking is worth the extra cost alone.

    It's up to you though.

Thanks Marty and TangleFoot. Very useful info. Yes my devices are USB. I also have a couple of USB printers (a Samsung Laser and another one I can't remember the brand of...) so I guess they will work too? #

i have found the crucial site and think I could add the extra 2GB of RAM for £20 - is it easy to install myself?

    Thanks again :)
