I saw a book in a charity shop that i thought might sell well, abebooks has it anywhere from £1 to £26, so am none the wiser whether it would sell on amazon!

How do you guys go about finding these particular, hard-to-find/get books? Just randomly looking in charity shops/car boots etc?

I ask because there's a book thats out of print, and marketplace sellers are asking for a minimum of £200 for it on amazon.

I don't want it to sell, I just want it! But I don't want to have to pay that kind of money for it (It retailed for just £15 before it went out of print a couple of years ago!)

Any ideas where/how I can get it for less? I will probably end up paying the silly price for it (I want it that badly!) but would be very grateful for any direction you could point me in!

I take it this is a particular edition (First?). The paperback version is currently still a popular seller but is only selling for about 90p at present.

It might sound obvious but have you checked on eBay? Rare and collectable books generally tend to reach lower prices on there than Amazon. (I suspect because eBay auction prices need a number of interested buyers all looking for the same book at the same time, to push the price up to the same that a book could sell for on Amazon.)

    Hi Jarvissa

Have you checked on https://www.bookfinder.com to see if the book is for sale anywhere else? It may be available on abe.com or alibris.com. - bookfinder.com will detail any copies listed.

Sometimes books are listed on Amazon by certain American Marketplace Sellers and they don't have the books 'in hand', if they make a sale they will then try and source the book for you. That may be the case with the book you are looking for.

Another alternative might be to check out your local libraries, they may be able to get it in from another branch for you.

You could also email the sellers and make an offer, if they have the book in stock they may be happy to accept £100 now rather than wait for £200 that they may never get.

If you post the book details on here, all of us merry book searchers could also keep our eyes peeled for you.

    Good luck finding the book.

    FFM :)

Well this is the amusing story! I found the book and thought about listing it, but never got around to it at the time, so i did it later, but did not have the book to hand, so i just googled it or whatever, and grabbed the ISBN. When i went to list it on amazon, they started at £12 or something, so i put mine on for £10 and it sold overnight. Sensing something was strange, i checked the details of the one i had at amazon against the actual book i had, and i had used the ISBN for the first edition, whereas mine was a bog standard reprint.

I then emailed the buyer telling her it was a mistake and offered to refund, but instead she asked what i wanted for it, i quoted £4.50, she agreed and i refunded partial amount and posted it. Madness, she could have bought the same copy for 65p off amazon! That is my first sale too!
