Hi all,
saturdays 20mile turned into 13miles + 4 mile walk, very frustrated as felt great. My sister came with me ( she is also running the marathon) but at 12miles and in the middle of the fen went very pale got slower and slower and was then sick, so obviously stopped with her and then walked the 4miles home with her. We had people coming for supper- so I didn't have time to go out and run the rest. Should I try and get a 20mile in this week> meant to be reducing distance now till race? any advice?(Family of 5: 2 adults & 3 children aged 7yrs, 4yrs, and 18months)0 -
if you want to do 20m for just the sake of doing 20m to know you can do if I would say get it in the next few days after that its getting to soon.. maybe just do a nice 16m this weekend.

Well those of you who claim not to ache after your weekend exertions - I do, so perhaps I'm making up for everyone else?
I can still feel the stiffness in the back of my thighs today (Tuesday) though it has improved a lot. My Garmin recorded the distance run as 13.2 miles in 2:12:21 (pace of 10:01), whereas the official distance was of course 13.1, and my gun time of 2:12:17 gives a pace of 10:05.
I've run a similar pace in one training run - one of those where it all just flowed and felt right, but that was at 7:30am and far far cooler, so on the whole I am pleased. The course was also more hilly than some of the profiles I'd seen online. The start/end hill was not that bad, but the ups and downs along the way were quite pronounced at times. I'll upload what my garmin tracked (non smoothed, the garmin mac software is a bit basic) - what sites do people recommend for posting images onto the forum?
My main complaint for the race itself was one of water - or lack thereof. I decided to carry a bottle of (free) lucozade in the early stages given the rising temperature which was useful to sip at. I then ignored the water at 2 miles, but had some at 4, 6, 9, and 11 (ish) miles. More 330ml lucozade bottles at 4 and 9 miles, though I only drank small bits out of each bottle and discarded just before getting new ones (urgh warm shaken up lucozade). But (and it is a big one), a plastic cup of water four times in 13 miles, which UK and Simply have already observed goes up ones nose and down ones clothing, was just not enough. Despite the promises of more water if it was hot and showers on the route on the web site, there was one girl with a single hosepipe at 4/11 miles and no bottled water other than to purchase at the fast food stalls for spectators. The hose spray had a reach of about 3 feet - so not good for cooling down circa 5000 runners! Lesson learned - take water despite what the organisers say. And at the end, the water there was a another single plastic cup, admittedly all this was able to be drunk rather than worn - but a bottle would have been nice here, and surely would not have been that costly.
No goody bag - cup of water (immediately consumed), another bottle of lucozade, and a snack sized mars bar were handed out in the finishing funnels along with the medal. Medal large and shiny though
Getting the chip off was OK, but after going through the rest of the funnels, I bent down again and immediately regretted it, feeling somewhat dizzy/fuzzy. Cue finding some shade by one of the marquees, and sitting down promptly, avoiding deer poo as much as possible. Really needed more water at that point and the thought of sugary lucozade was not helping I was holding! A couple of comedy phone calls to the OH ensued - trying to locate each other amongst the crowds without me having a faintThen I had an ice lolly followed by an ice cream (sat in more shade). Fantastic way to start to cool down and rehydrate! Was interesting listening to the commentator/announcer at this point; he was saying the last runner was at 8 miles (about 2:30 into the race by then). Didn't envy them still being out in the sun and heat.
Getting out of the car park was a bit of nightmare, as those of you who know the Windsor to Ascot road might guess. Not helped by a minor smash at the exit. We stayed around and had a smoothy waiting for it to clear a bit, but still took about 30/40 mins to leave the site at 5pm! And I stiffened up nicelyCouldn't face real food at that point (ice cream aside) - the smoothy was bad enough.
Lots of army cadets around as marshals, helping St. Johns people - they did a sterling job in full combat stuff in that heat. Also they were doing some good encouraging in the remoter parts of the course. Scary the number of collapsed people in the later stages though - people who otherwise looked fit and healthy. As much as you can on the ground in some distress, obviously. Not sure of stats on illness/injury overall.
Those selling food and drink must have made a killing - large crowd of friends and relatives given the unbelievably unseasonal good weather, and loads of need for drinks and ice creams from those competing on top of that. Made for a nice atmosphere too which all helps based on my experience at the three races I've now done.
As far as the run goes, from a running perspective, the first eight miles were completed in 1:17:14 which was a pace of 9:39 mile. Very very happy with that and something to build on. Hills and heat then played a part - but mostly the heat. My heart rate had got higher than normal. I was also struggling with tightening hamstrings at this point - probably with the dehydration. Slowing down allowed me a chance to stretch them out with a different stride. Also pleased I was able to do the last 1.1 miles at 9:40 pace again - never been able to do that on a long run.
I've not yet run again - perhaps tomorrow. Though I've done a couple of miles walk both lunchtimes. I've got a 5k at the end of October to target now...0 -
Its always a tough one water wise...I prefer bottles but cups are soooo much cheaper for organisers...agreed about going up nose though
Glad you've got another goal to focus on now after a great raced half!0 -
Not going to run tonight - shoulder has stiffened up and I'd rather leave it in that case to heal nicely than jiggling it around more0

Well controlled asthma does not need to hinder you - you just need to learn what you need to do to control it when running, and appreciate it might have some limiting factors. I've always need inhalers before exercise, regardless of my daily medication. I've also developed a breathing routine when running which works for me. Practice is the best way as everyone is unique.
My peak flow is still awful - even when the asthma is under control. On a good day it is still less than half the number someone of my age/height/sex should reach. Much to the Doctor's annoyance usuallyMight hinder my chances at being a world beater cos of the impact on/relationship with VO2 stuff, but I've successfully run a half marathon in a not too shabby time
