    Not 9st 2lbs for you!!!!:p

    110 lbs + 5.5lbs for every inch over 5ft.

Then deduct 20% for ideal marathon weight.

(This is only valid for men btw)

Guys, I have a question about knees. I think I cracked the cartlidge in one of my knees years ago using a wierd machine at the gym for the first time. Every now and again I feel a small twinge, but nothing bad. Now I've decided to take up running, possibly the single worst thing for knees possible. I need to do what I can do to protect it. I've bought a knee support, but the man at the running track last night said he wouldn't wear one. I can feel my knee a little bit today - still not bad - but if I'm planning on doing distance it could get worse. What do you guys recommend?

Go to your GP and have it checked before you start running!!!!!!

You risk causing yourself permanent injury if you don't know what the deal is!

It's easy to give in to that negative voice that chants "cant do it" BUT we lift each other up.
We dont count all the runners ahead of us & feel intimidated.
Instead we look back proudly at our journey, our personal struggle & determination & remember that there are those that never even attempt to reach the starting line.

You'll probably be surprised to hear that that is completely the reverse to what the evidence suggests.

Incidences of oseoarthritis and other knee complaints are lower in the running population than in the general population....due to the fact that running strengthens the joints and connective tissues.

Running itself is very good for the knees, its that long period of inactivity before starting running that causes the problems for most people because they try doing too much too soon.

Knee supports are a bit pointless really. If the knee isnt strong enough to run then theres nothing a 'support' is going to do to rectify that. And even if it could then it would be counter-productive because of the potential imbalances caused by shifting a disproportionate amount of the workload onto one knee compared to the other.

As B_O_S says, get any old injury checked out before going much further but what you're feeling from last night is far more likely to be just the expected effects from stretching tendons/other connective tissues beyond the point that they're used to with a force three times body weight.

Probably nothing to be concerned about at all but get it checked out nonetheless.

Although my bosses boss (one of the world's most respected ortho knee surgeons in his time) still insists running is bad for knees - he keeps asking me when I am going to give up! *rolls eyes*

He is old school though - most surgeons now say that a lifetime of exercise is beneficial but running too far too fast when you've been unfit is not - pretty sensible really :D

But from his experience it is probably fair to come to that conclusion.

It all comes down to the definition of 'running'.

If all the entrants in the London Marathon were classed as 'runners' then it is probably fair to say that surgeons should be horrified by the amount of knee damage being caused by runners.

But when they see a patient they wont have any knowledge of the consistency of running (or rather they are likely to get told porkies:p).

Now, when studies are done on those that have run consistenly for years the health of knee joints is pretty impressive.:D
