Uk - I dont think you'll be running too many pbs on that course - the last 400m of it is some kind sand and very energy sapping - but Rich what would he have to run to get the WAVA 2nd place out of interest??

Enjoy your relaxing poor - no to steps its bad for your knees :p

    62.27% = 5k @ 20:50

It took me 6 parkruns to get down to that time so that will be an impressive first outing.

It takes a while to learn how to run them.

20:50 on the Wimbledon parkrun equates to 1:10:00 on a road 10 mile and a 1:32:00 road half marathon.

So its doable, but still tough to translate because of the way the course needs to be learned....ask Beer Tins....its flat, so it sucks you in and then grabs your lungs and wrings the life out of them!:p

You may as well just follow the race director round - thats what I do!;)
(Hes an old man so you should have no trouble out sprinting him at the end:p)

I saw the news about Paula withdrawaing from the World Champs Marathon on Sunday and followed the link through to the 606 website here: http://www.bbc.co.uk/dna/606/F14507923?thread=6857853&show=50 to see what peoples comments are about it. I am amazed. Apart from the fact that hardly any of these people know a single thing about running, especially not marathon running, it seems that they are just out to put her down.

"paula racliff, is a joke and disgrace to the nation."

    "bottler. same old story"

"I'm glad. She'd only choke anyway."

I wish they would get off their lazy backsides and have a go themselves. Then they might understand what the difference between a half and a full marathon entails!

The Bedford & County athlete won the junior race at the World Junior Cross Country Championships in 1992 and it was evident that Radcliffe was going to be a world-class runner. At the age of 19, she finished seventh at the World Championships over 3000m, but then missed most of the 1994 campaign with a foot injury. Returning to action in 1995, Paula broke 15-minutes for 5000m for the first time and finished fifth at the World Championships in Gothenburg. The following season, the Alex Stanton-coached athlete replicated that finish in her Olympic Games debut in Atlanta.

In 1997, she won her first major medal, finishing second to Derartu Tulu at the World Cross Country Championships, but on the track was just outside the medals at the World Championships, finishing fourth over 5000m in Athens. In 1998, Radcliffe focused on the 10000m, making a solid debut of 30:45.58 in April, but a virus curtailed her summer campaign and left her weakened for the European Championships and forced her to miss the Commonwealth Games, but she finally made a breakthrough on the track at the 1999 World Championships, winning the silver medal in a Commonwealth record behind the fast-finishing Gete Wami and to enhance a great season, Paula also set Commonwealth records at 3000m (8:27.40) and 5000m (14:43.54).

In 2000, Radcliffe was in a race against time to be fit for the Sydney Olympics and in her warm-up races, the signs were encouraging for the 10000m. Leading from the front, Paula led for the first 24-laps (passing through 5000m in 15:05.70) only to be outsprinted on the last lap, despite setting a Commonwealth record of 30:26.97. But Radcliffe returned with a vengeance, setting a European best of 67:07 at the Great North Run, followed by a win at the World Half-Marathon Championships and the success continued in to the winter of 2001, as Radcliffe finally captured the world cross-country title in Ostend, but once again, the British athlete was outside of the medals at the World Championships in Edmonton.

However, on the roads, Radcliffe was invincible and she defended her world half-marathon title in Bristol, setting a European record of 66:47, which prompted her to make her marathon debut in April 2002. Tuning up for her inaugural marathon, Paula made a successful defence of her world cross-country title in Dublin before making an astonishing debut at the Flora London Marathon. She broke away from the field after six-miles and despite her sceptics believing this was naïve from a tactical point of view, Radcliffe did not fade as she ran the fastest ever debut of 2:18:56, clocking an incredible 67:52 for the second half. Continuing in this rich vein of form, she set a Commonwealth 3000m record of 8:22.20 in Monaco, one week before winning the Commonwealth 5000m title in Manchester, clocking 14:31.42 and this was followed by a devastating display at the European Championships, where Radcliffe won the gold medal in a European and Commonwealth record of 30:01.09.

Two months later, Paula obliterated the marathon world record at the LaSalle Bank Chicago Marathon, clocking an incredible 2:17:18 to lower Catherine Ndereba’s mark of 2:18:47 and her run of supreme form continued into the early part of 2003, setting a world 10km record of 30:21 in Puerto Rico, before annihilating her world record at the Flora London Marathon, clocking a superlative 2:15:25, but a minor leg injury forced her out of the World Championships in Paris. However the world record holder returned to win the Great North Run in a world-best of 65:40, followed by gold medals at the World Half-Marathon Championships and the European Cross-Country Championships.

Radcliffe missed much of the winter campaign through injury but her preparations for the Olympic Games were back on track, having improved her Commonwealth 5000m record at the European Cup (14:29.11), followed by a 30:17.15 performance at the British Grand Prix in Gateshead, where Paula lapped the whole field, including the former Olympic champion Fernanda Ribeiro, but while everything appeared to be going well prior to the Olympic Marathon in Athens, a last-minute injury affected her preparations and a bout of anti-inflammatories did not agree with her system and left her weakened prior to the Olympic Marathon. Having passed through halfway in 74:02, Radcliffe headed the leading group, but it was clear she was not comfortable and she could not react to the change of pace at the 25km point, and eventually dropped out at 36km, clearly exhausted. Only five days later, Radcliffe ran in the 10000m, but also dropped out of that race also.

However, Paula responded with a comeback victory in the New York Marathon in November (2:23:10), defeating Susan Chepkemei in a thrilling showdown and in April 2005, Radcliffe regained her Flora London Marathon title, before finally claiming her elusive world title in Helsinki, setting a championship record of 2:20:57 to end the year as the world’s no.1 yet again.

In 2006, Radcliffe was forced to miss the Commonwealth Games and the Flora London Marathon with a toe injurry, but soon after, it was announced that Paula and her husband Gary Lough would take a brief hiatus to start a family with the birth of their daughter, Isla, who was born in January 2007. After being diagnosed with a stress fracture in her lower back, there was not enough time to get prepared for the 2007 World Championships, but soon after, Radcliffe returned with a solid runner-up finish at the Great North Run and then announced she would return for the New York Marathon. Radcliffe regained that title in a thrilling race against Wami.

However, injury problems marred the run-up to Beijing. A foot injury ruled her out of the Flora London Marathon and just when things began to pick up in training, Radcliffe was hit with the bombshell that she was suffering from a stress fracture in her left femur. Despite specialists declaring that it was impossible for Radcliffe to be able to make the start-line, the world marathon record-holder undertook a fierce schedule of cross-training to be in shape for Beijing. Despite staying in the chasing group until 32km, Radcliffe clearly did not have the conditioning and faded from the group, limping home to finish 23rd.

In her first race since Beijing, Radcliffe set a British record of 51:11 to win the Great South Run and retained her New York Marathon title with a hat-trick of wins as she pulled away strongly in the final 10km with a time of 2:23:56, defeating Lyudmila Petrova and Kara Goucher.

Paula has been British Female Athlete of the Year an unprecedented five times and was the IAAF World Female Athlete of the Year in 2002 and in the same year was awarded the MBE She is a European languages graduate from Loughborough University.
