Dont panic guys.... i made it back.... 10m in the heat 1hr 29min.... not bad.

The training could be essential, it may well be this sort of temperature in Athens even at the beginning of Novemeber!

I dont like this bit of the course description:

    Thurs 20/8 5 Miles Hilly 00:48:59 (09:46/mile)

5 Miles - Hilly - box ticked. Not the most enjoyable run - I felt like I was going along at a snail's pace but was faster than I thought. I've got the day off work tomorrow and rain is forecast (:T) so I can be lazy and run a bit later.

Krider - if you're making blackberry and apple crumble please send some my way ;)

    Morning all!

Uk some nice steady running yesterday - in the heat of the day though

Well done simply - that'll be all the down hills making it faster ;)

Did a very slow 10k this morning - had a very stiff muscle at the start so challenged myself not to sweat for the first 2 miles and it kept me very slow (since its still really hot here), overall 6.2 miles in 1:06:51 so nearly 9 minutes slower than yesterday ;)

    Happy running!

Great North Run Pack arrived today.

Im in Zone K, now looking at this im right at the very back.

I put my time down as 2hrs - 2hrs 20mins, now something must have gone very wrong, or there are alot of very fast runners entering this years event.

This is not what i wanted,i dont want to be running past all the walkers, slow runners again..

    Telephone call time..

Its more likely the case that there are a lot of people who claim to be faster than they are, Alias.

It sums up why the big races are really not worth bothering with any more - the likes of the GNR and LM used to be the pinnacle of the sport that you would work towards. You could be sure of getting a good race and have a high chance of pb potential.

Now, far from being the ultimate aim these races are the first port of call for people who havent even run a half marathon before or in some cases havent run any sort of race before. So they are just packed out with tens of thousands of walkers and very slow runners which just creates hassle and just about guarantees that there is no chance of pbs except at the very front.

And I can see it getting worse yet.

As an example, if you're looking to do a half for the first time and you look at past results of say the GNR and the oldest half, Freckleton, you will see that at Freckleton there were 17 runners taking more than 2:20, at GNR there were 14,000!

So, on the basis of safety in numbers, the GNR will attract all the slow runners/walkers. And for the reason that everyone else wants to at least to get a properly run race they will be more inclined to do the less hyped races.

So paying through the nose and all the accompanying hassle at the big races just make them less attractive to regular runners. They're only worth doing if you can get an 'invite' entry of some sort so that you can at least get a free flowing run.

Alias - they go on your last half time - but some peeps on RW who put down 2 hours are in zone C so K seems very weird!

Still havent got mine so who knows what they are going to do with me??
