Oh, I love this article! By the way, does everyone else get 'ooh, running isn't good for you' from their friends? I'm getting rather tired of this statement, closely followed by the 'having your midlife crisis' question!

You certainly get a lot of people who think that it is bad for the joints when the opposite is true.

However, the caveat is that that is only true for people who run regularly long term. Those who 'binge run' with a few weeks activity, followed by a few weeks doing nothing, then another binge period.....put their joints at high risk.

So as I always keep saying the most important word is 'consistency'.

Those are the two phrases I hear most frequently too!! Usually from couch potatoes with a list of ailments as long as your arm ;)

I've learnt something else new today - there are such things are binge runners :rotfl:

    Hi all,

Back into training properly now for the Great North Run on 20th Sept, can't believe it's less than 8 weeks away!

I did the Manchester 10k in 58mins, so from Rich's post earlier I need to get down to 54mins to be able to run the GNR is 2hrs (my goal)
My problem is I've been a bit lax on the running recently - always going once a week, but nowhere near as much when I was in training for the 10k when I was going 3-4 times a week...

Worryingly as well, I looked at a training plan for a half marathon from the Great Run website and my first run yesterday was supposed to be "20 mins easy run" - is that really supposed to help me train to run 13.1 miles? I did 2.91 miles in 25 mins yesterday, probably slightly faster than "easy" but I might be able to keep up that pace for the most part of the GNR....

Also, it's the Lancaster 10 miler on Sunday (anyone else doing it?) which I've not really trained for but have done 10miles before.... Most I've done recently is 5miles - do you think I should go for it (would like 90mins time) or not stress myself and train for the half?

Loving this thread at the moment - I'll hopefully be a bit more regular as my training progresses!

Hi JK - well done on the 10k!

If you havent trained right through - its going to be tough to get up to 1/2 marathon distance - what distances have you been running in your one run a week??

Also - never follow a plan that gives you training times in minutes (unless it says distance as well, in which case ignore the times and do only the distance) - if you run slowly you wont get anywhere near the distances meant in the training plan!

Don't you lot do any work? How on earth have I missed 4 pages today! :D

Good runs everybody, I did 4 and a bit miles again this evening - I need to find the GPS to actually see how far that 'bit' is!

On my one a week I'd usually do 4.5 miles along the prom and back but now I'm back "in the zone" I'd I'm to do that twice and then a longer 6-7 miler on the weekend.

After a few weeks I'd try and do the 7 milers during the week and a 10 miler at the weekend.

I think I will struggle - I'm not an experienced runner, only started in Feb and trained to do the 10k in May but this is twice as far with a substantial break in the middle.
However, I've got my place, I'm determined to do it - just need to put the training in... whatever the weather!

I think the other thing that was motivating me in Feb-May was weight loss, I managed to lose 2.5 stone through running to get me down to my target weight. Now I'm not losing any more (I don't need to really) I'm less motivated to run so now need to manage the carb intake so I have the energy to run 13.1 miles rather than limiting it to lose weight!

Thanks for advice about the training plan, thought it sounded a bit dodgy!

Ah, meant to say, aimed to go out on a longer slower run tonight, topped 4 miles, compared to 3.6 - but turns out I didn't go any slower, 10:18 miles. Bit annoyed with myself, if I'd gone slower, I'd have probably got another mile out. Still, newbie learner - I still went further and maintained my top speed, so pleased with that. Try harder to slow down and get distance in tomorrow!
