Just experienced a very nice pair of pedestrians who saw me coming and neatly arranged themselves in single file and then said 'well done' at the same time as I was thanking them.:D
Why this stands out is because it is so rare and tbh it was also unnecessary because it was that time of night when stepping out into the road is not really a problem. But what a refreshing change to experience some politeness - I bet it will be a while before it happens again.Gt NW 1/2 Marathon 21/2/2010 (Target=1:22:59) (6:20/mile) 1:22:47 (6:19):j:j

I'm very new to this running lark, but, err, wouldn't that just be common courtesy??? I always move, and make sure my dog doesn't run in front of runners - obvious I would have thought???0
-
Yes, you would have thought so wouldn't you?
However, more often than not there is no hint of trying to give you any room even if you've been seen in plenty of time.
Funnily enough, the older generation who are less able to move swiftly tend to be the ones who show most courtesy in giving a bit of room.
Maybe its just a sign of the times.:rolleyes:Gt NW 1/2 Marathon 21/2/2010 (Target=1:22:59) (6:20/mile) 1:22:47 (6:19):j:j

One newspaper article that Becky should find interesting:
http://www.wandsworthguardian.co.uk/sport/4483919.McMahon_wins_Gunnersbury_race/
I trust he didnt actually win that Volvo as a result of running a 35:40 10K - if he did, he can take us for a spin the next time we meet up!:p
Rory was the first person we linked up with at the Wimbledon parkrun so nice to see him getting some success over 10K!:DGt NW 1/2 Marathon 21/2/2010 (Target=1:22:59) (6:20/mile) 1:22:47 (6:19):j:j

I'm not sure its anything to do with how regularly the mile is run because you used to find that when someone was in WR shape for the mile they would quickly take the 1500m and 1000m records as well, often within a few days of each other.
So if the 1500m record was broken now the mile would probably broken around the same time. And anyway the mile has been broken more recently than the 1500m so the reasons for the lack of WRs lies elsewhere I feel.
It used to be an exciting time of year around August when the record attempts were kicking in and pre-publicised. Now it seems nobody wants to put their necks on the line in the way that Coe/ovett/Cram did by stating in advance that they were having a crack so that the media could whip up some excitement.
As for a female 4 minute mile - that is completely off the radar for a long time yet. The current WR is 4:12:56!
And as for the Rory pic - I'm not quite sure with it being a distant shot, but it was certainly him that won the race, maybe he paid someone to stand in for him because of shyness.:pGt NW 1/2 Marathon 21/2/2010 (Target=1:22:59) (6:20/mile) 1:22:47 (6:19):j:j

The mile isn't run as much, 1500m is the "standard" distance at most athletics meets. But as rich says, surely someone in WR form for 1500m would have a crack at the mile, too?!
It's interesting that over the distances ranging from 400m to 3000m, only one WR has fallen in either the men's or women's in the last 10 years (give a few months)! And that was the men's WR in 1000m, which I'm sure I've never seen raced before!
P.S. And yes, getting from 4:12 to 4:00 over a mile is a huge difference. I'm sure the women's WR will fall, but not any time soon IMO.Running Club targets 20105KM - 21:00 21:55 (59.19%)10KM - 44:00 --:-- (0%)Half-Marathon - 1:45:00 HIT! 1:43:08 (57.84%)Marathon - 3:45:00 --:-- (0%)0 -

The problem with common courtesy is that it's not so common anymore! It's not found much in London, at least not in central London in my experience.Running Club targets 20105KM - 21:00 21:55 (59.19%)10KM - 44:00 --:-- (0%)Half-Marathon - 1:45:00 HIT! 1:43:08 (57.84%)Marathon - 3:45:00 --:-- (0%)0
