My Dad's parents were Grandma & Grandad & my Mum's were Nanny (Then Nan when we got older) & Grandad. Not sure why, surely Nanny is harder to say (& Mummy/Daddy) for kids than Nan/Mum/Dad? My Nan is my only biological Grandparent now but I have a Stepgranny who is Hon.Grandma, short for Honary Grandma as she's honoured to be my Stepgranny. To her face i'd call her Grandma Jean

    Interesting thread!

I've always felt very very lucky in that I had all 4 of my grandparents around until I was 16 and they were Grandma and Grandpa and either their surnames or occasionally where they lived. Round where I grew up, I think we were always thought of as a bit posh for using Grandma and Grandpa and I don't often hear it round here either so I wonder if it's more of "class" thing rather than a regional thing?

This little one will have things a bit more complicated - my mum says she is not old enough to be a Grandma nor does she want to be nan or nanny or nana , DP's mum doesn't want to be Nana and his dad definitely doesn't want to be Grumps even though we all think he should be and my stepdad doesn't know either but his grandchildren call him Opa as he's not English. I haven't even asked my dad what he wants to be known as! Good job we have 25 weeks left to come up with something!

My mil hated her mil so much that she tries to force my kids to call her gran-nan??????
I hate my mil as much as she hated hers so i make a point of calling her nan b(surname) exactly as her hated mil was known as i know it winds her up.

P.s my mum has a long term (15) yrs partner that my kids refer to by his first name but my friend thought this weird and he should be granddad.
Now i feel slightly guilty for never encouraging this any views?

I think it's your own personal preference and if your mum's partner had wanted to be called granddad, maybe he would have said something?

My girls are the only ones who call my mum's partner Poppa, their 3 cousins call him by his name.
I felt strongly that I didn't want to do that so I asked what he wanted to be called and wouldn't accept his name.
