My two grandfathers (who died when I was very young, I don't remember them) were Grandpa R**** and Grandpa J***** and now my dad is Grandpa A****. My mum died just before DD was born and for some strange reason we never mentioned what she would be called so I refer to her as Granny L****, don't know if she'd have appreciated that!!!! In Wales we're lucky to have extra names because of the Welsh, so DD and DS have a Mamgu and Tadcu on DH's side (I also had a mamgu) and DH's gran is Nana, his grandfather was Dad and his GGM was Mam. So a wide and varied selection!!!

    Jxx
And it looks like we made it once again
Yes it looks like we made it to the end

My mum died a month before my first grandson was born. she was known as nanny to my children. To us it felt `wrong` somehow to be called the same .I didnt want to be granny as i was just 40 so i ended up as nan nan.

My mum and dad are Grandma and Granddad (with two 'd's - my dad is very pernickity about it :D) as when my DD1 was born, my maternal and paternal grandmothers were still alive and known as Nan and Granny so my mum had to be something different ! My Granny became known as Little Granny by all her great-grandchildren as some of my aunts inherited the title 'Granny'. We also thought Grandma was classier ;). OH's mum died a few weeks after DD1 was born and has only ever been referred to as 'Granny Carol' even though none of them knew her.

Whatever you call yourselves though, your grandchildren will add their own variations at various times. My dad is called David, my mum calls him 'Davey' affectionately and my DS spent a good 6 months calling him 'Daisy'. My best friend's son called his Grandma 'Binma' for a while, which she coped with, but hated when it was abbreviated to 'Bin' :rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:

Somebody recently told me that mum's parent's are traditionally grandma/ grandpa, and dad's mum and dad are nan and grandad. Not sure how true that is. My mum is a nana, and my DH mum is granny. I called all my grandparents grandma and grandad (I have lot's due to step family!) :D
Doing that would mean that my MIL would be grandma to one grandchild and Nan to 2 others (my kids). My MIL's request was that she was Nanny to our children as she already was a Nanny to her daughter's child.

My kids call all of them nanny (2 grandmothers and 2 great-grandmothers) but say nanny first name when talking about them to distinguish which they mean.

You could go Welsh and be called Nain (prounounced a bit like like the number 9) and it means grandmother.
