I get called 'other' nanny as well. My son in law's mother is in a wheelchair and is known as Dalek nanny, and sometimes I am 'Cyber' nanny (as I can walk upright!), but my youngest granddaugher when she hears she is going to see nanny will sometimes enquire 'Dalek nanny?' and is told no, other nanny! so she uses that for me at times.

I asked to be called Nana after my mother's mother who I was very fond of.

In my family great grand-parents were always nana and grand-dad.
Nana's were always the older of the generations.

When I was growing up I had a nana and papa (mum's parents) and nana and grandee j** (my dad's mum and her partner). We used their surnames when referring to them indirectly.

My OH parents are dead but they are referred to as granny and granda, my parents are gran and granda and I only have the one nana left and all the great grandkids call her nana.

Forgot to add that the reason that he got called grandee was because he had a ship in a bottle thing and the name of the ship was grandee. My dad's dad and his wife don't really get referred to, and if they do it is by first name.

When I was a child I had Granny G and Gran M, and Great Gran

My DS had Pop and Granny I and Gran H and Papa D

My DD has Gran H and Papa D and Gran G and Papa D. I was a tad annoyed that ex's parents wanted to be Gran/Papa as well, I thought it would confusing:cool:

Anyway, when we were small we called my maternal grandparents nanny and grandad Bayn (first part of their surname) and our paternal grandparents nanny [first name] and grandad [first name].

My children have developed their own names:

My mum and dad are called nanny and grandad hot polo as they like extra strong mints

My nan and grandad were called nanny and grandad cold polo as my grandad liked polo mints. Sadly neither is with us now.

My paternal grandmother was called the same as I called her but she is no longer here either.

Their paternal grandmother (my mil) is granny cake as she makes lots of cakes and their paternal grandfather is called grandad dogs as he used to have two dogs and our old dog always went there for his 'holidays'.

Even though it is simpler now, they have kept the names for those still here.

I don't know if that helps or not! I think it makes it easier for little children to know who you are talking about if you name them around the things they associate them with iyswim?

My bf's mum is Granny to her grandchildren (bf's sister's children), so I imagine would want to be the same to ours when we have some.

DDs have:
Nan and Nana (My Nan and Nana...)
Nanny (My Mum) and Grampa,
Grandad (My Dad) and Nanny M***
Grandma (Hubby's Grandma)
Grandad R***** (Sometimes just called by name, Hubby's Dad) and Nanny P**
Granny WooWoo... (Hubby's Mum, who when asked what she wanted to be known as requested 'Mrs W' I told hubby it made her sound like the cleaning lady so it evolved somewhat... She recently asked that she be known as Nanny W***** but that was what Hubby used to call his other Nan and he doesn't think it fair...)

When I was younger I couldn't say Grandad and used to call him Ambag... This stuck until he died when I was 26...

DD1 used to say Dankar and Dankdad... But they never stuck...

As kids it was always Nanny and Grandad. We just didn't like the word 'grandma' or 'granny'. My Nans didn't like it either and were very happy with Nanny.

As we got older we dropped the 'ny' (much like when you stop calling your mother Mommy and call her Mom instead). So they were 'Nan'.

I know I'll want any possible grandchildren of mine to call me Nan or Nanny too. I've always disliked the word grandma and associate it with being very old (whereas I don't so much with grandad - how very odd!)

I called all four of my grandparents Nannan & Grandad. My OH has two Gran's.
Our LO is only 5months old but were refer to my parents as Nannan & Grandad. OH's mum is Nana Mandy and his father is Grandad Cox
