Hi Just gonna open a basic bank account but dont know which. Im with RBS who are they affiliated to? Any suggestions

Hi Annie, glad you found us here.

RBS also own Mint and Tesco credit cards, they're two of my creditors. They're currently not connected to Halifax (that's Bank of Scotland). I've got a Halifax Easycash account and I've also got a Co-op Cashminder one. Halifax was incredibly easy to set up online; Co-op are also good but they have less branches. It's true though that you can use a Post Office to pay into Co-op, though cheques take longer to clear. Hope it's all going ok for you.

Kudox, sorry to hear about your uncle, and good luck with doing the DMP yourself. I'll be following with interest - at the moment I'm happy to have them at arm's length while things are quiet but maybe later on I might have a go at doing it myself, when I feel ready to have more control over it all.

Bailey59, here's hoping you had some sort of resolution today, sorry it's all so stressful.

    Hi to everyone,

  • Seeing Barclays tomorrow, as I need to transfer debit cards to cash cards...... hope I can keep mine (no O.D - clean) as I don't know how I will cope not having the facility to pay over phone or on PC..... do yuou think I could, will find out tomorrow !.

    Hi Hyland1ellen,

I don't know much about Barclays but I think a lot of the basic accounts will give you a Solo or Electron card which you can use like a normal debit card, so paying over the phone or online is fine. Some places though don't take them, eg, I have to pay for my monthly railcard in cash now, but you soon adapt.

    Good luck YPx

    Hi Mrs Ryan,

Can I ask (and sorry if this has already ben explained elsewhere, I STILL haven't caught up) but are Kensington a fee charging DMP company? And if so is there a resaon why you are with them rather than one of the free ones?

Just asking because this may be why it doesn't seem to be making a dent as much as you expected! When i first looked into a DMP I spoke to a fee charging company, and they said 10 years. Then when I found payplan and went through it with them they said 5 years, for more debt (hubby's included and 2 years down the line of having my head in the sand!)

Just a thought, hope this isn't going over stuff you may already have talked about!

    Hiya!

Yes, they are a fee-charging DMP company. There are several reasons - 1)the biggest being basically because half of my 13 debts  is with JD Williams group and they have an agreement with them that if they refer a customer then a discount is given off the balances.
2)Also CCCS and Payplan both said no to me - because I didnt have enough debt (its only 4k) and I have too much surplus income - they were a bit unsympathetic and said it seemed to them that on paper I could pay my bills so why did I need their help? Kensington werent that judgemental. I know people slate fee-paying companies but in my case it really was my only option.
It seems that I was wrong about my Evans card - its gone from about just under 600 to back under the original limit (now at 480 - original limit 500) and my Citi Card is nearly back under the limit, its just the dam catalogues that dont seem to be moving!!

    Hi,

A quick question Payplan instructed me to cancel my overdraft protection with Barclays and they are being a complete pain the a$^e about it! First I tried to do it on the phone and they said they couldn't do it for security reasons and I would have to send a letter....so I did but I didn't sign it! They then sent it back to me with a compliments slip to ask me to sign it so I did (but I used my short work signature) and now I have recieved another letter to say that as the signature doesn't match the one they hold on file then could I please pop into my local branch to cancel it. But I don't want to, and god knows what signature they would have on file as I opened the account when I was 13!!! Not sure what to do as I really need them to cancel this!
    Goal weight....lighter than when I started :D
