    Nope.

The first one just bailed out on me.

The second one... words fail me. If you can find the driver for a pentium dual core E5300 on that mess of a site you're a better man than me gunga din! :)

Besides, it may not be the processor driver - it could be the one for the DVD.

Or... it could be something else entirely

Does it do the same thing if you leave it on the bios screen

How often do you use 2 optical drives at once?

As in playing a CD on my old "slow" one while reading/writing/using a disk of some sort in the other? Not too often. But that's beside the point really because this is a new computer less than two weeks old yet, and the errant DVD drive is the one that came with it.

Using a software disable of the ATAPI DVD definitely stops the "ticking".

So the "ticking" is deffo the system polling the drive.

The DVD led's won't light up, they're not doing anything, but the HD activity led will flicker.

I would check the mobo website for updated IDE controller drivers but this may be how the system works... you have a SATA board & they've stuck a legacy IDE socket/controller on there just in case, bless 'em.

Having re-read through the thread I don't think the "ticking" is doing any harm, annoying as it is, & I'd be tempted to ignore it.

If you can't ignore it then try an IDE to SATA adaptor (about a tenner I think) & let the SATA controller manage all 4 drives.

I think you might well be right, except for the red bit... being polled at once per second is a LOT of drive accesses per day. I just can't concieve of that not being detrimental to the life expectancy of the drive. Just doesn't seem as if it ought to be right, to me. You'll have to work really hard to convince me. Honest guv :)

OK... off to search for "mobo"... wish me luck...

    Ok...Good luck :)

I've done a lot of reading on the interweb :p for the last hour & you're not on your own! It does seem to be, mostly, confined to the newer, SATA, boards.

I think IDE connections are offered as an afterthought & will soon become obsolete in much the same way as AGP graphics ports have given way to PCI-E.....

It won't be long before all new mobo's have no IDE connection at all & as such I think the bios is lacking when it comes to IDE support.

I'd think about the IDE-SATA adaptor, for a tenner ish it's got to be worth a go.

Otherwise disconnect the IDE DVD & enjoy flicker free computing... I can't see another way, sorry.

hmmm... phones, award ceremonies... a restaurant... AHA! A motherboards site...

..and ONLY 1100 hits for IDE controllers.

Gosh. Despite the different names and the different spiel a whole bunch of them point to Driver Detective which insists on downloading .NET 2.0 which, almost inevitably fails because my version tells me it's 3.5

Then there's all the FREE CURES except they ain't. They're free TESTS and if you want an actual CURE it's gonna cost you.

My brain hurts. I'm off to bed. Back in the morning.

    Thanks everyone.
