Getting ever closer. Try this for size.

I went into the device manager, clicked on the ATA DVD drive and clicked on the disable option.

With no CD in my IDE DVD drive - the ticking STOPS ! Yay! :D

With a music CD in there - the HD led looks as though it's flashing normally. Yay! :D

But... with a data disk in there - it's supposed to open explorer with a listing, and the hard drive gets active as if having a look and (possibly) launching explorer... then it stops. No explorer, no autorun on a disc that has an autorun.inf file... and then... the HD led "ticking" comes BACK !!! BOO !!!

    Things to do:-
    • Set for take no action on the IDE DVD drive and see what I get.
    • Re-instate the ATA DVD drive and see if n/some-disc-in-the-other-one makes anything change...
    But first... have coffee.

Well, ATAPI is technically IDE :p Maybe your BIOS needs updating so it can properly support the ATA drives, I'm guessing they should come up as ATA...

I'm really not sure about the fan thing, it sounds spooky haha :) Sounds like it's interfering with the fan controler on the mboard anyway, Maybe something has the same IRQ number? according to Wiki,
    • IRQ 14 — primary ATA channel;
    • IRQ 15 — secondary ATA channel.
It shows up on the post I think, might be in the BIOS too...

It really does sound like that ATA DVD drive is conflicting ;) What does it say under resources?

No resources tab on properties, my head's spinning - please point me in the right direction.

    Thats fine....

Haven't bothered reading the whole thread so not sure why the discussion has turned to devices. Is the indexing service turned off and 'virtual memory' set to a fixed amount?

Indexing is OFF for both HD's

Memory is set to system control.

I've got 4G of memory and am using so little at the moment I have 3G left and am not using the page file at all.

Using a software disable of the ATAPI DVD definitely stops the "ticking".

How about swapping the cables, like use the ATA cable of the HDD for the DVD drive - could be a dud cable...

OK, let me take a break, I've been here all day. Then I'll try the cable swap.

Actually <slurp> I'm not so sure about swapping the cables over. If there's a problem on it I don't want it to stuff my HD too. I don't have a spare cable that I can substitute for it.

We've got the problem pinned to the Atapi DVD now, so... driver?, set up? conflict?.... ????
