are you absolutely sure it's the cpu fan going berserk and not just the ROM drive spinning the disc up to speed (ie open the side up and watch it when it happens)

As for the light tbh the amount of time you've spent on it i'd either disconnect the LED, put a piece of tape over it or learn to live with it, it's normal to see a fair bit of activity and it won't do your HD any harm

Not having read the entire thread... sorry.. is it just the light that is bothering you? A flickering light really is normal. It means that there a READ operations against your hard disk which is needed for normal OS operation.

If it is really driving you that mad get yourself another Hard disk and re-install windows onto it, keep the other as a storage disk in your machine. they are cheap and at least your mind will be at rest.

I'm "bothered" that something is reading my disk once per second.

I'm "bothered" because that means something is reading my disk eighty six thousand four hundred times a day.

Thirty one and a half MILLION times a year!

    That's why I'm bothered.

I'm bothered because though it might be some sort of "normal" operation devised by Micro$hite I can't believe for one second that in the long term it isn't going to reduce the working life span of my drive.

WHY does it need to do this?

Sorry, yes, I finally got that one. It was the ROM drive - and it ONLY does it on CD's and DVD's that IT wrote. It sounds like a high speed vibrator as it runs and it always runs at its highest speed. It's as if the original tracks were writen in an oval so the thing is going beserk trying to follow the track. Very strange. I tested four different bits of software and I've no idea which one burned the dodgy disks. More work for my jobs list.

Done it already. Piece of cake. Reduced the angle and stabilised it. Left it leaning on purpose though, so that it doesn't lose its value as a tourist attreaction. :)

You'll have to find me a tougher mission than that! :p

It's on my "tuit" list. I'll get round "to it" eventually...

hmmm... phones, award ceremonies... a restaurant... AHA! A motherboards site...

..and ONLY 1100 hits for IDE controllers.

Gosh. Despite the different names and the different spiel a whole bunch of them point to Driver Detective which insists on downloading .NET 2.0 which, almost inevitably fails because my version tells me it's 3.5

Then there's all the FREE CURES except they ain't. They're free TESTS and if you want an actual CURE it's gonna cost you.

My brain hurts. I'm off to bed. Back in the morning.

    Thanks everyone.

I would avoid Driver Detective if I were you - if their software doesn't work they don't like to refund. Google them for more details.
