And there's still the oddity with the processor fan going beserk when there's a data disk in the drive... ?Hi, I'm a Board Guide on the Old Style and the Consumer Rights boards which means I'm a volunteer to help the boards run smoothly and can move and merge posts there. I'd think about the IDE-SATA adaptor, for a tenner ish it's got to be worth a go
So am I right in thinking that I need to find one that takes (for preference) two SATA (or certainly one) inputs and one IDE input and pushes them out to an IDE output to the motherboard?
Oops, I might have a single IDE cable but it has an HD and a DVD on it already. Adding in the SATA would make three units on, effectively, one cable.
And I must apologise if the sound of my brain whirring woke you up early this morning!
If this polling is normal, it must be software based somewhere? So it ought to be possible to turn the darn thing off????Hi, I'm a Board Guide on the Old Style and the Consumer Rights boards which means I'm a volunteer to help the boards run smoothly and can move and merge posts there. http://www.maplin.co.uk/module.aspx?TabID=1&criteria=usb&ModuleNo=36036&C=SO&U=Strat15 is what you need. A bit more expensive than I thought
From the maplin faq....
Q- Can this convertor be used to connect IDE optical drive to motherboard's SATA socket? - Iggy
Answer- Yes that is exactly what the device is used for.
Unless you can find one cheaper I'm not sure it's worth it given that it might not fix the issue.
As Zandoni said it's normal for your mobo & I would be tempted to ignore it.
Maybe move the PC so that you can't see the flickering? If this polling is normal, it must be software based somewhere? So it ought to be possible to turn the darn thing off????
It will be Bios based, I doubt that you could turn it off. Maybe a visit to your boards manufacturers website?? Or the manual that came with the board?Always try to be at least half the person your dog thinks you are!0 -
How about a bit of tape over the LED or open the case and pull the connector off the Mobo.0

Soory guys, thanks for the input today. I had a "slight" problem earlier.
My Driveis the original drive C: from my old machine and, as such, has a windows operating system on it. Of course, that system has the hardware set-up for the old computer - I thought I'd be a good boy and "repair" it. Somehow finished up with a SECOND windows installation on that drive. Tried again, realised it was doing ANOTHER install so stopped it. NOW I had TWO windows AND a recovery! <sigh> Tried booting from the 2nd windows so that I could clean up the errors. Hmmm. so NOW I end up with TWO windows and a recovery on drive
and TWO windows on drive c:
I needed to edit boot.ini to get drive c: to boot normally because somehow neither windows on C: would now run. Not even in safe mode. So booted from E: but could I "edit" a file? No such command. In the end had to allow another install on drive C: (so yes that's now three) and then go edit the boot.ini.
So here I am back again. Phew. Now... how to uninstall two windows versions...? Simply tossing them in the bin doesn't work. The first time windows finds a file it can
t put in the bin it aborts (which, I have to say is bloody annoying. Why can't it just skip?).
Back on topic. I'll have another good hunt around the bios. Later.
All this for "normal"! <sigh>Hi, I'm a Board Guide on the Old Style and the Consumer Rights boards which means I'm a volunteer to help the boards run smoothly and can move and merge posts there. It's also worth bearing in mind that any adjustment you make in the bios could adversely affect the performance of your computer. Especially when you don't have a fault in the first place.0

I'm pretty sure that there will be nothing in the bios to adjust, other than disabling the IDE controller... which would solve the "problem"Always try to be at least half the person your dog thinks you are!0 -
I don't see the point of this polling. What are they polling for? Why? What do they think I'm going to be doing EVERY second? Write a new post/email/program at one a second? Change a disk or file once every second? I don't even pick my nose that often!Hi, I'm a Board Guide on the Old Style and the Consumer Rights boards which means I'm a volunteer to help the boards run smoothly and can move and merge posts there. Right then.....
Make sure there are no discs in the drives, reboot pc. When booted open & close each drive tray.
Here's hoping
BTW have you checked for firmware updates for the drives?Always try to be at least half the person your dog thinks you are!0
