While you ladies from the TTC thread are around I've got a nice story. Our friends who married 5 years ago have been TTC ever since. After over 13k on IVF they had given up and applied to adopt. Well they rang Wednesday evening to tell us she's 13wks pregnant naturally. Nice to have a lovely story to share. :T

Lotus is when you leave it until the placenta falls off of its own accord.

Even if I don't do it, I will do delayed cord cutting which is leaving the cord until it has stopped pulsating before you clamp it.

I also hope to use my own cord ties rather than have the plastic clamp in that case, so it's more comfortable for the baby.

i love the idea of Lotus but Oh is not so keen and I'm not convinced that there are good reasons for it, like there are for delayed cord cutting.

I will probably decide on the day as the MW is now looking into Lotus as I'm the first woman to mention it in this area, and in a way I'd like to do it so that other women then get that choice as well, cos then the MW would be experienced in it.

But if the placenta is all gunky and grim then it can get cut off! :rotfl:

I don't think I would want to keep the placenta attached for days but delayed cord cutting sounds a good idea (will have to do a bit more research before fully decide) what kind of cord ties are you referring to? I never knew there was a choice.

good news jha!! yay! :j:T you're lucky to get a measurement since your babe was on the lower end of the threshold for the nuchal scan.

thanks for the reassurances (again!) ladies...not that I enjoy a bit of a MS, but at least I know it's fairly normal to crop up after the 1st trimester. Wish my ginger tea wasn't at home! seeing if this cup of green tea helps a bit - but still just could've been dodgy food :rotfl:

  • Sami - great birth story!

So what's the rationale for delayed cord cutting? (am realising how little I know!)

There isn;t a choice your MW will offer you, but you can ask them to use ties you have made yourself. Some people make a braid with embroidery thread, some use ribbon - it is worth checking what your MW/hospital will 'allow' as although it is your choice it's not an argument you want to be having just after giving birth!

If they are not keen, you can ask them to leave the cord a bit longer than usual when they clamp it, then tie it and remove the clamp yourself once you get home.

Delayed cord cutting is fairly widely accepted as a sensible method these days, and good for the baby in numerous ways.

    http://www.google.co.uk/search?source=ig&hl=en&rlz=1G1GGLQ_ENUK311&q=delayed+cord+cutting&meta=lr%3D&aq=f&oq=

A few links there, but because the placenta is full of rich blood, allowing it to fully discharge this blood into the baby before clamping it and cutting it off means the baby gets the full goodness from the placenta, which has, after all, been your baby's only source of nourishment for nine months.

IT seems to me crazy to waste this blood and goodness by clamping immediately, especially as in most cases there is no need for this. I could argue there is never a need but in C-sections I believe doctors are always keen to clamp immediately and if in that situation you wanted to delay cutting you'd need to do specific research into that.

The cord is long enough that baby can be put onto your tummy or chest while you deliver the placenta.

I'm assuming here you are aware of skin-to-skin contact and its benefits immediately after birth, and also the benefits of breastfeeding straight after delivery, but if not I can get info on that too.

I have loads of links in my favourites on this kind of thing as I'm planning as natural a birth as possible, so I'm happy to share what I've found.
