ugh, I can see it now. Tell my boss this morning that I'm pregnant and this afternoon ask to go home early b/c I'm not feeling well!! LOL, "I swear it's a coincidence!"
Might try and get out at 4, depending on how work looks. Feel really crap and would love to just lie down in bed right now (dreading train home - will prolly just make me feel more sick).top 2013 wins: iPad, £50 dental care, £50 sportswear, £50 Nectar GC, £300 B&Q GC; jewellery, Bumbo, 12xPringles, 2xDiesel EDT, £25 Morrisons, £50 Loch Fyne

Despite that, none of the other couples seems to have the faintest clue about labour, babies or anything! It was weird cos I've read loads of books and got loads of info from people on here, so I felt like the class swot - and I don't think that went down too well!
...Snip...
Anyway, not learned anything so far but it's nice to know I have prepared myself well and OH seemed chuffed he knew more than anyone else thanks to me talking to him about stuff all the time.
He said only one of the other men had read a book at all, and the others really were clueless but I guess that's what most people go on these courses for?
Sounds exactly like my classes, they were late on and I couldn't believe how little everyone else seemed to know about labour, the birth, and babies in general. How do people let themselves get to 30+ weeks and not know the signs of labour or what essentials you need to buy for the baby?? Like you say, I know the classes are to teach things but honestly, the rest of our group knew nothing from doing their own reading, they hadn't even read that NHS Pregnancy book they give you at the booking in appointment which tells you EVERYTHING you need to know. DH was pleased he knew more than the other dads (and mums) and I had to stop putting my hand up and answering all the questions.
I didn't learn anything new from any of the 4 classes, but enjoyed the tour of the hospital wards and demo's of the equipment etc, because that's better in real life than reading about it.
I was most disappointed I didn't make friends either, that was the 1 thing I really wanted from attending the classes, but we didn't seem to have anything in common (apart from pregnancy) with anyone there.0 -

oh dear, I'm a bit worried about my plan to make friends at antenatal classes now! our area is fairly diverse in its neighbourhoods and such, so it really be a bit of a lottery - hopefully I won't be the only 1 there that's actually read books and stuff! I don't understand how a woman could get to that stage and not even have done a tiny bit of research on what to expect? maybe I'm just irrationally curious??top 2013 wins: iPad, £50 dental care, £50 sportswear, £50 Nectar GC, £300 B&Q GC; jewellery, Bumbo, 12xPringles, 2xDiesel EDT, £25 Morrisons, £50 Loch Fyne

Thanks Skinty, it's great to hear about this stuff. I've read a bit about skin to skin, probably because you or someone else on here posted the kangaroo website. I hadn't heard about BF straight after birth - if you have a useful link for that I would really appreciate it. Going to read a few links about delayed cord cutting now while the boss isn't looking!
I'll just post some random links as I find them:

I will just mention that there are studies that have shown that syntometrine, the injection they give you to speed up delivery of the placenta, may affect the baby's ability to breastfeed immediately after birth, but I don;t have anything concrete on this either way.
Personally, I am not having the syntometrine and am going for a physiological third stage, but I'm pretty sure women have the injection and still BF at birth so that's something you'd want to look into yourself if it concerns you.
But our Mw was very encouraging of Bf at birth so I imagine it's pretty mainstream now.:cool: DFW Nerd Club member 023...DFD 9.2.2007 :cool::heartpuls married 21 6 08 :A Angel babies' birth dates 3.10.08 * 4.3.11 * 11.11.11 * 17.3.12 * 2.7.12 :heart2: My live baby's birth date 22 7 09 :heart2: I'm due another baby at the end of July 2014! :j
