  • Hi Rufus86

I work in the English - Polish and Polish - English language pair. My native language is Polish. I agree with you that native speakers of foreign languages are more sought after, but not always. It seems that qualifications and experience is the key.

I've got 2 x degree (one from UK), Diploma in Translation + 10 years of experience, so I think it is worth a shot if you got the 'right' papers and can get some useful references.

Go on then, I'll join in. Have a read of mine to see someone fall from grace :D

Attempting to build myself up again though....

First job - Freeserve Internet - Customer Services
Second Job - Freeserve Internet - Tech Support
Third Job - Database administrator - Carpet Express
Fourth Job - Computer Technician - University of Sheffield
Fifth Job - Computer Technician - High School in Dewsbury

Current Job - Problem Resolution for Asos

It may sound like I have a nice job, but trust me. It's working nights, and the wage is not all that great. A massive cut from previous jobs, but after being made redundant at the High school, I was unemployed for nearly 2 years so basically took anything I could get.

I'm on £12,600 a year. Thats down from £26,000 at the school, plus student holidays off work :(

I'm applying for work within asos, just missed out on a job working IT last month, But the person I lost out to was like battling a giant, He had essentially built the computer systems at Asos from the ground up here in Yorkshire, where as I had the same experience but external to the company.

I will be back working as an IT Systems officer...OH YES I WILL. :D

Gone through many pages of this thread and got to say a little surprised that salaries of most people are not as high as I was expecting. Maybe I have a warped view because I earn a pretty good living from not working very hard. I run my own sites and an online store and earn between £3k and £4k a month after tax. I put in about 1 to 3 hours a day and that's it. (occasionally I might put in a 10 or 12 hour day). The thing is I could be earning a lot more if I put in 5 or 7 a day instead of the 1 to 3 that I do. However, when I first started I did do very long hours in the first 2-3 years to establish myself.

Its a payoff between quality of life and the extra income from the extra work put in. I've gotten very lazy in the last couple of years so prefer the existing schedule. I also have a quite a nice side income from spread-betting stocks and make anywhere between £5K and £20K a YEAR from that. I did take losses in the first 3 years I recall when I got started in spread betting, but persistence has paid off as I always make !!!!!! profits than losses these days.

I am not bragging here, but I must say I thought the salaries people are being paid for many of the job titles they mention throughout out this thread do not pay accordingly. I was expecting higher salaries. Of course, there may be some really big earners who prefer to not mention their earnings.

It just goes to show how unfair the world is. We have people in the entertainment industry, sports industry who make many millions for work everyone would love to do. We have people who are the engines of the economy (the regular joe) and yet they are paid relatively little compared to these people. Essentially, we pay actors, sports stars, singers because if we don't download movies, songs, attend venues, then these guys wouldn't be paid such astronomical and immoral figures.

However, I do not begrudge millionaire/billionaire businessmen because they have ingenuity, great idea(s), great invention(s). They employ 10s of thousands of others in the process.
  • I work in Sainsbury's as a General Assistant and I'm on £6.79ph.
My partner works for a mechanics as a Valeter and is on £8.50ph.
  • Hi - I work as a freelance forklift instructor.
Current daily rate varies between 85 - 100 for local work (under 1 hour drive) and between 95 - 120 for more travel.

No milage, no perks, have to do the tax etc myself. I pay for my training, health insurance, professional memberships etc.

When there is no work there is no pay! This year Jan and Feb and August have been washouts with just 15 days in total for the three months! Christmas off every year - unpaid!
When I'm busy its adequate, when I'm not, its not.

(Having just read it - why do I bother!?!)

What do you sell? Do all of the sites sell things, or are they info based sites and you get money from advertising?
I'd like to make money from websites but wouldn't know where to start.

Also, interesting to see someone else who spreadbets stocks. I've been trying for about 4 years / paper trading and went live this year, just trading at 50p per pip or so. I'm up nearly 4k so far this year. Hopefully won't lose it all before Christmas. Are you more TA based or FA based with your trading?
