  • 30, international marketing/sales, midlands, £40,000 + bonus (in last 4 years has ranged between £1000 - £3000, but I never see anything remotely close to those figures because of the nasty tax man and student loans compay), pension, mobile phone, health insurance + travel insurance for me and my wife. Biggest benefit to me personally though is the travel - I love seeing new places and travel to Europe, Middle East and Asia.

I thought someone else's history was interesting when they did a breakdown of how they got to where they were so here's my version:
17 - temped during summer hols, office clerk - £6.50/hour
    18 - same thing
    20 - same thing
    21 - placement year at uni - engineer - £9.5k
    23 - temped for 6 months in a university - £6/hour
    25 - marketing assistant, midlands, £20k
    25 - marketing assistant - asked for a payrise 6 months in, £24k
    26 - marketing/sales in current job - £30k
    27 - current job pay rise - £35k
    28 - current job pay rise - £36k
    29 - current job pay rise - £37.5k

I have friends and family who are investment bankers in London, and they earn a heck of a lot more than me, drive nicer cars (if they have one), live in flats that cost more than my salary, have several holidays a year, but I genuinely don't think they are as content as we are.

I tank they are and particularly with the location information as well. I see your from Guildford Pete? I think that this is great for younger people (its scares me to say that as I think I'm young!), to see that you can have various career paths and still earn similar monies, and that geography is a massive consideration too.

    Aged 30

Trade plate driver. £20 a drop, plus 25p/mile over 60 miles. Fuel paid, halves on public transport between jobs.

Hours, about 40-60 a week. Average earnings are hard to say, but if you see me hitching, I'm having a bad, bad day (like £20 there, get yourself home), so pick me up :D
Yes it's overwhelming, but what else can we do?
Get jobs in offices and wake up for the morning commute?

Beware of picking a self employed father - no good for maintenance

Aged 48. Bank NHS Nursing Auxiliary. £8.51 per hour.

I get no perks and only get paid if I work. I get no sick pay and can't afford to take holidays - I've worked every week for two and a half years.
